Year 4 (P5 in Scotland) is a brilliant age for reading! Reading independently means that kids can get stuck into the books that really appeal to THEM.
There is no right or wrong as to what children should be reading at this age – encourage whatever sparks their interest – non-fiction, illustrated books, books about magic or laugh out loud stories.
It’s normal for children in Year 4 to have a variety of reading levels. Some will love illustrated fiction and comics, others will be looking for longer, more challenging stories or will only want to read non-fiction books.
There are plenty of excellent books to suit all reading levels, the most important thing is to ensure that the books they choose are suitable for their maturity level and interests, which will encourage them to read for pleasure.
