Max is a hedgehog who lives with his family in a nice little home, but unfortunately on the wrong side of the road from the Park, with its beautiful lily pond, and more importantly its juicy slugs, worms and snails!
The busy road is a dangerous barrier but Max notices that humans seem to cross it quite easily. If they can, why can't hedgehogs? So Max sets out on a quest to find a safe way to reach the Park.
His first attempt ends in a nasty bump on the head, and Max finds when he tries to speak his words are all mixed up. He is now a Hodgeheg, not a hedgehog, but he is still determined to fulfil his mission.
After some careful detective work, Max eventually discovers the best way to cross the road - with the help of the lollipop lady, of course!

I read it to Year 3 Ringway 2018 aged 7 to 8
The Hodgeheg 9780141332383
5 stars
What is the book about?:
The Hodgeheg is all about an inquisitive hedgehog named Max who dreams about crossing the perilous road to reach the park and the delicious food that lives there. Max is a brave young hog, who, despite having a few accidents is determined to reach his goal. However, when Max has a bump on the head his speech becomes muddled up, which my class found very funny!

Who is this book suitable for?:
This book is suitable for children aged 7 and above and more confident readers may be able to enjoy the story in one sitting. The story is full of challenging vocabulary and excellent, detailed descriptions. People who enjoy stories in which animals are the main characters will also love reading this book as well.

My recommendation:
I would recommend this book to animals lovers or those who enjoy an adventure story. Dick King Smith is a master at creating compelling animal adventures and if you have enjoyed The Hodgeheg you should try some of his other books.

I liked when all the hedgehogs crossed the big road in a single file. I liked that bit because they all stayed in a straight line. The characters I liked are max, pa, ma and pansy.
This book made me laugh and feel a little sad. The pictures were good and nice to look at.

I enjoyed reading The Hodgeheg, it was a nice quick/ easy read which meant that it could be devoured in one sitting.

I was particularly amused by the clever use of word play in the book after the protagonist gets bumped on the head and all his words become jumbled. These words were very fun to read!! I can imagine that they would make younger readers listening to the story giggle.

All the characters are friendly and with only the mention of one bad thing ever happening to the 'Hodgehegs', the story is quite a sweet and happy one.

I would recommend further Dick King Smith books if you enjoy this one.

What is the book about?
It is about a hedgehog who is trying to cross the road. The main character is Max and he gets hit on the head so he gets lots of his words muddled up and is really hard to read what he means.

Who is the book suitable for?
I would say that it is suitable for six to nine year olds because there are lots of mixed up words. It would be nearly impossible for a four year old child to read.

My recommendation:
I would recommend this book because the characters are all very funny. One of the hedgehogs gets a bump on the head. He gets his words muddled up and it's very funny when that happens. All of my class enjoyed it and I hope you do as well.
