'I loved The Explorer' Jacqueline Wilson
'Rundell is now unarguably in the FIRST RANK' Philip Pullman

From his seat in the tiny aeroplane, Fred watches as the mysteries of the Amazon jungle pass by below him. He has always dreamed of becoming an explorer, of making history and of reading his name amongst the lists of great discoveries. If only he could land and look about him.

As the plane crashes into the canopy, Fred is suddenly left without a choice. He and the three other children may be alive, but the jungle is a vast, untamed place. With no hope of rescue, the chance of getting home feels impossibly small.

Except, it seems, someone has been there before them ...

A small plane carrying a group of children crashes into the Amazon forest, leaving them to fend for themselves.

My son raced through this book, and could not put it down, and read it in just a couple of days. As it was was a holiday read, we had to make an emergency trip to the bookshop to purchase another book by the same author so that he and something to read for the rest of the trip! Since finishing it he has given copies of it to his friends as birthday presents. Highly recommend!

This was the first book chosen for the school book club for years 5 and 6 (10 and 11 year olds).  The plot centres around Fred, Con, Lila, and Max who are on their way back to England from Manaus when the plane they’re on crashes and the pilot dies. For days they survive alone, until Fred finds a map that leads them to  a secret ruined city in the jungle where ‘The Explorer’ lives.
A phrase repeated throughout the book is “Fred had never wanted anything as much as …” (eg. p179). Fred seems to be filled with longing to impress his father throughout the book. The Explorer has a secret which he wants the children to keep, but Fred is reluctant to do so because he knows it would impress his father – “He had never had a secret so valuable. He had never had a secret that would make his father put down his newspaper and turn to look at him” (p238).
When it comes to the character of Max, there was rather too much mention of snot, although I did enjoy the Explorer’s description of him as “a cataclysm in a cardigan”.  In fact the language throughout the book is a joy to read, for example, “ … chilly lump of guilt sitting in his stomach” (p227); “… the heart has its own petrol station, its own coal, its own soap.  It will renew so use it hugely” (p361).  This was a lovely traditional children's adventure story, where the children are the heroes and survive in the main without adult help.

This is one of the best books I have ever read! This book is about some children who crash land in the amazon forest having to survive on their own as their pilot died.

I read this book to my 6 year old son, and we both loved it. I really looked forward to story time as we got to move on in the adventure had by the children in the rainforest. It has many great talking and learning points, as well as some jeopardy and danger. Great storyline, really well developed characters and wonderful descriptions throughout. There are some hand drawn pictures which are amazing (according to Finn) and overall a great story from an author that we'd not read before - but whose books we now have all of.

A riveting and compelling tale. A story of grit and survival yet woven with warm and human moments in it. This book will remain in my all time favourite list.

I loved this book by Katherine Rundell as it had amazing pencil sketches on the pages not to say anything of the great mystery that the book holds. It also has outstanding descriptions of the settings and characters so good that you can picture them. When their plane crashes ,Fred,Con,Lila & max are left to survive in the jungle by themselves. When the mysterious clearing and the the trees around are set on fire they narrowly escaped by rafting along the rapid river. They have to get back to their parents maybe with mysterious help along the way

The Explorer is a really good book about children being stranded in a jungle after a plane crash.  They learn how to cook fish and survive in the jungle. This book has some interesting characters, which I felt were described brilliantly.  This is a great adventure story and one which I would recommend for 8-13 year olds.  I really enjoyed it.

This is a brilliant adventure story that gives you a fantastic insight into life in the rainforest. Four children find themselves lost in a rainforest after the plane they was flying in crashes and only they survived. The book takes you on their journey with them, how they scavenge and build to survive. It would be a brilliant class story for a class learning about survival, explorers and/or rainforests. Beautiful illustrations surround every chapter, that really bring the book alive.

This book is ok but you have to get into it but once you get into it you can't put it down .

This book is all about a plane crashing in the middle of nowhere  but this flight wasn't any usual flight this flight contained 4 children , Fred,Con & brother and sister Lila and Max,it is all about how they use teamwork, determination and maybe a little help for someone along the way.
