By Year 5 (P6 in Scotland), lots of children will be making independent reading choices – finding out about new books from friends, schoolmates and teachers.
However, they will probably still need help finding the right stories for them. Reluctant readers may need some encouragement and guidance, and bookworms will quickly run out of material and be looking for more!
Many Year 5 children will still prefer illustrated fiction and there are lots of great books and graphic novels out there for their age group.
Others will be keen to read longer stories and may start to enjoy middle grade books as their reading stamina grows. There are so many fabulous middle grade authors, it doesn’t just end at Harry Potter! Although, of course, that can be a great place to start...Back to the Year 4 Reading List
