Winner of the 9+ catergory of the Sainsbury's Children's Book Award and shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award

Amir is mad. He's crazy. But the hospital wouldn't let a crazy person in. They must have interviewed him and checked his qualifications. But maybe he didn't even meet them? Maybe he hasn't even come from India. He might have arrived on an alien spaceship and snuck in here in the middle of the night.

Eleven-year-old Joe can't remember a life outside of his hospital room, with its beeping machines and view of London's rooftops. His condition means he's not allowed outside, not even for a moment, and his few visitors risk bringing life-threatening germs inside his 'bubble'. But then someone new enters his world and changes it for ever.

THE BUBBLE BOY is the story of how Joe spends his days, copes with his loneliness and frustrations, and looks - with superhero-style bravery, curiosity and hope - to a future without limits. Expect superheroes, super nurses and a few tears from this truly unique story.

`Poignant, hopeful and heartbreaking' Fiona Noble - Children's Editor, The Bookseller
'Deeply moving and utterly gripping . . . Stewart Foster carries off an astonishing feat of storytelling in this exceptional book' Julia Eccleshare, lovereading.co.uk
`A gripping and deeply moving book' Jamila Gavin, author of Coram Boy
'One thing we know about good books is their amazing ability to inspire empathy in the reader; to explore ideas and viewpoints that arise from experiences that are out of our own realm. The Bubble Boy does this with warmth, quirkiness and a light-hearted touch.' The Guardian

This isn't the type of book I would normally pick to read. Once I started to read it I couldn't stop and wanted to find out what happens to Joe the main character. This book deals with things that are sad so wouldn't be good for anyone who gets upset easily about things like death, serious illness etc. I don't think anyone under age 8 should read this book. I am really glad I read this book it made me so thankful for all the good things in my life.

This is an absolute gem of a book which kept me alternating between moments of buzzing curiosity as I created wild theories about where the story was going, and pure heartbreak. I'm taking this into my Year 6 class tomorrow and I know it will he passed around and loved by many of them. Would be suitable for younger years but not much younger than 9 or 10 I'd say.

Bubble boy is a really lovely story. Joe spends all his time in hospital. He is not allowed out and people are rarely allowed into his bubble. He meets someone who changes his life and they have some really brilliant adventures. I really like Joe, he is brave and inspiring. He makes you feel like theres nothing that cannot be achieved. This is a brilliant book i will recommend it to my friends

(Toppsta note: this review contains details on the storyline. Don't read on if you don't want to find out what happens!) I read most of this on my own, but some bits I read with my mom. I enjoyed this book, it was a lovely story. Joe lives in the hospital, as he has a condition which means he is not allowed outside. Joe is a lovely character and he is so brave. I loved the bit when Joe gets his special suit so he can go outside, I felt so happy for him. The mysterious character Amir is great and very likeable too. There were some bits in the book that made you feel a bit sad. I would definitely recommend this book

This book was a great mix of life lessons and emotions. I loved everything about the main story but I found the ending confusing, it was hard to know what really happened.

I initially hoped this book would be something that me and my 8 year old could read together but she is not interested she prefers books that make her laugh so I have continued to read this I am an adult and I have really enjoyed this heart warming story. It certainly has a feel of the story wonder

‘Brimming with heart and soul, The Bubble Boy is a life-affirming story of a boy with superhero-sized dreams who longs for a chance to be brave. I cheered and cried and hoped – for Joe, and for the amazing people in his life who care enough to be heroes right alongside him. Simply wonderful.

This is a book I wouldn't normally read but I'm glad I did.   I really like Joe and I loved his superhero dreams, but I felt sad that Joe can't run outside when he wants to.   His life in a bubble doesn't sound fun but it was brilliant when Amir decided to give Joe the adventure of a life time.  I'm glad I don't live in a bubble like Joe but I did like the fact he had 12 TV screens!!

It is a lovely book. I feel very sorry for the boy because it would be so awful to be stuck in a room like he is. My favourite thing is to be outside and I would hate it. It is a great ending and it made me feel glad that he got to go out! My best friend came for a sleepover and he picked my book up to read and couldn't stop reading it either so he had to borrow it to finish it off! Thank you for my book.

This book will grab you by the heart and squeeze it!
Joe has to spend his life living in hospital in an isolation bubble.  Any outside germs could kill him.  Life is very predictable until Amir pops into his life and shows him that life can be new and exciting.
This books deals with complex issues and emotions and shows children that there are plenty of other children out there with much bigger problems than theirs.  A must-read for fans of 'Wonder.'

(Toppsta note: this review contains details on the storyline. Don't read on if you don't want to find out what happens!) I really liked this book and I think that everybody who has read this book will understand how hard it is to live in a hospital all the time.
It was really cool when Joe got to go outside in his suit and experience everything for the first time, especially as Amir took him on such crazy adventures!

This is a beautifully written book. A story unlike anything we have read before. Joe was our favourite character, and we really felt for him, willing him to succeed. This story allowed for us to talk about feelings, bravery and sadness. We would absolutely recommend it to our friends

I loved the story, it was very different to anything I had previously read.   The story has been written very well because most of the story is actually set in just one room and unless the storyline is gripping enough, it could easily become boring however the complexity of the storyline that Stewart Foster creates ensures that boredom is nowhere in sight!!
I also love the sideline problems and twists in the story.  The main character Joe is brave and can live with lots of things going wrong.  Nurse Amir is a clever but strange behaving nurse who loves aliens and is the nurse who sneaks Joe outside the hospital.  Amir endeavours to give Joe chances in life beyond his hospital room.

I actually read this book myself...yes I know I'm an adult! It's been awhile since I read a book so fancied a change. My daughter shall read it now that I've finished although she's asked me questions along the way, I think she may feel sad when I tell her about Henry.
I loved this book..the storyline is simple and never really leaves the grounds of the hospital but it's such a special story.
It made me smile a few times a long the way.
It's clearly not written for an adult but I enjoyed it non the less.

I loved this book. I really liked the relationships Joe built with the other characters in the book. It made me think about all the children who are poorly and have to stay in hospital.  I though the title of the book made a lot of sense.  Iwould recommended this book!

This book is beautiful written, incredibly charming, funny, heart breaking and also incredibly hopeful. It will also make you hold your breath wondering what's going to happen and gasp in amazement. It made me cry in parts because some of the characters are so moving. My class absolutely loved it too. Brilliant story telling too. One of my best of many reads over the last year.

An interesting plot with some challenging concepts for upper key stage two children. This one got passed around my year 6 class extensively. Friendship, adventure, hope and fun combine in this story. The text is not challenging but might wish to be vetted for some children.

Good reading but sad ending. Because of illness, Joe, the main character in this book lives his life indoors and its his deadly illness that stops him from going out.
I enjoyed the story but wish there had been more fun facts to read as I found the book to be quite sad. But, after reading, it made me reflect how grateful I am to be in good health. It gave me an understanding of what life would be like if I was unable to go outside and if I had a limited amount of friends.

An amazing story to teach about the difficulties people go through with mental health issues.
Just like the Goldfish Boy, the characters are completely relatable and their back stories are faultless.
The storyline is a whirlwind of emotion, and Stewart Foster has done an excellent job of portraying some difficult decisions and conditions.

As an upper junior school teacher, I read Bubble Boy by Stewart Foster to see if it would be suitable for the children in my class considering it deals with some very complex issues.  I thoroughly enjoyed the book and think it deals with the situation in a fascinating way that children can relate to easily.  I would seriously consider reading this to the children in my class to show them that there are children the same age as themselves that face challenges far greater than they could imagine and do so with courage and bravery.  A fantastic book.

Lana is a child who loves all creatures great and small and i'm sure she would have loved this book if she'd given it half a chance but unfortunately after reading page 3 where a man slits a pigeons throat she refused to read any more and has passed the book on to her not so sensitive cousin who is thoroughly enjoying 'The Bubble Boy'
