What Lila wants to be more than anything else in the world is . . . a Firework-Maker!

But firework-making is not just about being able to make Crackle-Dragons and Golden Sneezes. There is also one special secret: every Firework-Maker must make a perilous journey to face the terrifying Fire-Fiend!

Not knowing that she needs special protection to survive the Fire-Fiend's flames, Lila sets off alone. Her friends, Chulak and Hamlet - the King's white elephant - race after her. But can they possibly reach her in time?

This edition is beautifully illustrated by Peter Bailey.

I read it to 4C aged 8 to 9

We have just finished reading this in our Year 4 class and have absolutely loved following Lila on her journey! From start to finish, there have been many ups and downs and we all (myself included) had goosebumps throughout the final chapter.  An engaging story that follows a loveable character on a difficult journey, all whilst teaching us about the differences between cultures.

This is a great adventure story for children aged 7+, it is about a young girl who wants to become a Firework maker but to do this must go on a perilous journey to face the Fire-fiend.  It is a short read full of magic, adventure and danger.  I love Philip Pullman as he writes fun and engaging books for children (and adults!) and this one is good for exploring stories and also drama.  The girl Lila in the book is a strong character who is independent and determined and you'll be routing for her to succeed from the very beginning.  I would recommend reading this book to children as well as more confident older children to read by themselves.

An amazing but relatively short story about a girl called Lila and her determination to become a firework maker. She embarks on a mission to find the final firework making secret. She sets off alone but will need help and protection along the way.
My son loved this book and it has a good moral of friendship and determination. Would recommend 8 plus year olds x

A must read for 7 + children, this is about an ambitious girl called Lila. She wishes to become a firework maker. To fulfill her aspirations, she requires the three gifts of talent, courage and luck. The story traces her adventure about how she achieves this. The themes of adventure, friendships and challenges are explored in the book.
I would recommend this book as it illustrates the proverb- Where there is a will, there is a way.
