Philip Pullman

  • 5 stars across 88 books
Sir Philip Pullman is undoubtedly one of our finest authors. His magical universes, wonderful characters and exciting stories have earned him multiple awards, including the Gold Smarties Award for The Firework Maker’s Daughter, the Carnegie Medal in 1995 for The Northern Lights and the 2001 Whitbread Book of the Year for The Amber Spyglass.
He is best known for the His Dark Materials series, widely recognised as modern classics, having sold millions of copies across the world and been translated into more than 40 languages. Audiences fell in love with Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry’s story all over again with the critically acclaimed BBC drama of the Northern Lights trilogy, which started in 2019. Pullman continued Lyra’s story in the Book of Dust series, starting with La Belle Sauvage.
His other works include the Sally Lockhart Quartet, a series of detective novels for young adults set in Victorian London, and the magical standalone The Firework Maker’s Daughter.

He lives in Oxford, England and was knighted in 2019 for services to literature.

    Our favourite Philip Pullman quotes:
“You cannot change who you are, only what you do.” Serafina Pekkala, The Amber Spyglass

"That’s the duty of the old,” said the Librarian, “to be anxious on behalf of the young. And the duty of the young is to scorn the anxiety of the old.” The Librarian to the Master, The Northern Lights
Without stories, we wouldn’t be human beings at all. Philip Pullman
