By the time kids get to Year 8 (S2 in Scotland), there are so many distractions clamouring for their attention. To stop reading from sinking to the bottom of the list, a really good book is essential!
Children will continue to read at their own pace, and there is no need to worry if your Year 8 prefers shorter books or illustrated fiction. Others may start to gravitate towards the Teen or Young Adult sections of the library or bookshops or start reading adult books.
Parents, teachers or librarians can advise which are the most suitable for this age group. Happily for Year 8s today, there are so many excellent books for that tricky stage when you are no longer a child but not quite an adult either.
As well as allowing readers to get lost in an exciting adventure, or fantastical imaginary world, books are a great way to tackle important issues too. There are lots of brilliant reads that deal with subjects like racism, loss, love and teenage life.
