Meet the bacteria, viruses, and other germs and microbes that are all around, but too small for us to see, in this children's science book by bestselling author and science comedian Steve Mould.

What do a squid that glows, fungus that grows, and tiny creatures in the soil under your toes all have in common? Find out in this dynamic and engaging book all about bacteria, viruses, and other germs and microbes. The Bacteria Book perfectly walks the line between "ew, gross!" and "oh, cool!", exploring why we need bacteria and introducing readers to its microbial mates: viruses, fungi, algae, archaea, and protozoa.

The Bacteria Book is a fun and informative introduction to a STEAM subject that brings kids up-close to the big world of tiny science. With remarkable photography, kooky character illustrations, and lots of fun facts, this book uses real-life examples of microbiology in action to show how microbes keep our bodies and our world running.

I read this book with my 6 year old son and he was instantly absorbed in the book, which presents the information about bacteria both good and bad in nice colourful bitesize chunks.  Some of the information was a little too advanced for him but this did not detract from the book and only adds to the longevity of the book meaning that we will be able to dip in and out of it for many years.

This book was great for my daughter. It’s a book we shared together and both learnt about the bacteria and fungis we never knew. It’s a book with good pictures and is a talking point with her friends. Definitely a book which will be use over and over again.

My son really enjoyed this book. We've yet to read all of it, as there's understandably a lot of information in the book. I've learnt a lot about bacteria and fungi myself, so it has been a shared learning experience. Some of the information is a bit too technical for him at the moment, but it means that this book is one that he can grow into. He was fascinated by the photos and information about how diseases are spread, and particularly the part about poo (the gross stuff), as I predicted he may be. He's already shared it with a friend who is a few years older than him, and they found it interesting too. It was a good quality book and the glossary at the end which showed you how to pronounce the tricky words was also very helpful. I'd recommend this book to any children who are interested in science.

This book is jam packed full of facts, both of my girls loved the illustrations and I think we have all learnt something and it will be a book that we come back to time and time again, there are some things that they don’t quite understand so will be great to come back to it at a later date

This is a really interesting and well written book full of amazing facts and fabulous illustrations. I read this with my 6 year old - but it’s a bit too detailed for her to understand it all just yet but it’s definately a book we will come back to as she gets introduced to topics at school - my older son will also look through the book as I think it will help him with his studies. I learned so much from this book and it’s led to talking points with the kids

My 10 year old Son was instantly absorbed in this book, which presents its subject matter with great variety of colour, styles, imagery and photography.

The appropriately named Steve Mould does a brilliant job of telling the stories of invisible and micro nasties, while fitting in plenty of good science. The information is presented in bite sized chunks, with plenty of microscopic photography as well as cartoon imagery and infographics.

The book nicely combines an international perspective, for example on oil spills, farming and ocean life, with detailed sections on the human body. The book takes a ‘Horrible Histories’ approach to making facts compelling, but doesn’t shy away from important explanations about catching a cold, harmful and helpful bacteria, and more.

The 70 pages are packed full of content and the kind of information children like to repeat to their parents and grandparents. In short, this book is a real hit for children old enough and curious enough to learn more about bacteria in a fun and accessible way.

This is a lovely colourful and easy to understand book. I enjoyed reading it to my 6 year old and he loved it, especially how the microbes were illustrated as colourful little monsters. My son loves facts and this book was full of them! My four year old also enjoyed looking through it and asking questions about the illustrations. I think this is a book they will keep picking up!
