Sky Private Eye and The Case of the Sparkly Slipper: A Fairytale Mystery Starring Cinderella 9780993553721

This was an enjoyable twist on the Cinderella story. The prince needs to find the winner of the best costume at his fancy dress ball. So he calls in Sky private eye to investigate. Sky is a master detective, and a master cupcake baker. Along the way, she questions various fairy tale characters, giving some cupcakes to help with their disappointment at not being the winner. She finally follows the trail of mouse prints and pumpkin pieces to Cinderella's house. Where her nasty stepsisters are waiting. But Sky has a recipe for cupcakes to make them nice, not nasty. The prince finds his winner, who gets her own shop to make fancy dress costumes. This was a fantastic twist on the standard proposal that was much more suited to the ages of the characters. One of the nicest parts is that the last page contains a recipe for nice, not nasty cupcakes. The ingredient list and instructions reference fairy tale characters, which makes it quite fun.
My daughter enjoyed this book. Her favorite part was when Cinderella's sparkly costume was revealed. We haven't had the opportunity to make the (chocolate) cupcakes, but she is eagerly awaiting the chance. This is a great book for fairy tale fans, and it gives so many opportunities for adults and children to bond. I'd highly recommend it.

I read this to my daughter Evie age 5, this story has an original take on Cinderella where the prince is searching for the girl who wore the glass slipper at a fancy dress party. Evie loved that it had well known characters in the story including jack and the beanstalk, the three little pigs and others. She’s already asked for more books in this range. The length of the book is perfect for where her attention span is at the moment, longer than the short books but not too long to lose her attention. Also loved the recipe page in the back of the book to create some cakes that Sky Private Eye makes in the story.

My three-year-old daughter and I very much enjoyed reading this together. It's a twist on the classic Cinderella story which she is familiar with. She loved the face that Sky Private Eye gives out cupcakes willy nilly and I liked the fact that the nasty sisters weren't nasty in the end. It kept her attention really well and she was keen to know what would happen at the end. A nice little touch is that there is a recipe for cupcakes at the end that we have talked about trying. I think taking a familiar story and giving it a bit of a kick is great to get kids thinking about what happens next and what might happen. We loved it.

A modern twist to the classic fairytale Cinderella. The story is about a ball with a fancy dress competition and sky pirate eye is called in to help solve the mystery disappeare of Cinderella.

My daughter likes it and tries to read along, she’s still learning to read so can only do a few words of it would take an age to read it!

I found it a bit of a tongue twister to read and I wasn’t keen on the story as I’m a very big fan of the original Cinderella. But it’s not about if I like it. My 5 year old daughter enjoyed it and loved pointing out things that were happening in the pictures. It’s beautifully illustrated and kept my daughter interested until the end.

I do however love that there is a cupcake recipe at the end of the book :)

I read this to my two year old granddaughter who loves books.
The story is a modern take on Cinderella, the illustrations are bright and interesting for a child.
However there was a lot going on, in the story and the illustrations and I felt she didn’t really take it in.
I think this wasn’t the fault of the book, she is just a little young for it.
I will certainly return to it in the future and imagine it would be a great read aloud book to use as a start for literacy in school, for creative writing.

I read this to a 5 year old, who enjoyed the book. It was a different take on Cinderella who enjoyed making costumes and cupcakes. I did think the addition of cupcakes was unnecessary.

My son and I were excited to read this, as he loves the traditional story of Cinderella, and I like to read different takes on fairy tales. However, our opinions on this book were really divided!
My son loved the pictures, the 'American style, action language' and the cupcakes that kept appearing. He liked the dog and found it quite funny. He also enjoyed recognising the other characters from different fairy tales, like Red Riding Hood or Bo Peep.
I did not enjoy the book much. I found the storytelling lacked originality of language and lacked charm. The story was not particularly well written or exciting, and the pictures were so 'busy' and not that appealing to me. I did like the fact that there was a strong female lead character, however!
I would not be keen to read others in this series, although I'm sure my son would!

This story is a twist on the classic Cinderella. The Prince finds the glass slipper after it is left behind after a costume party, and enlists Sky Private Eye to help him find the owner. They ask several fairy tale characters before they find a trail of pumpkin which leads to the nasty sisters' house, where they find Cinderella. When it turns out that the slipper belongs to her the Prince gives her her own costume shop to run because she loves making costumes he loves dressing up.

I was underwhelmed by this story, and I think that some of the children in my nursery class found it difficult to follow. I did like some of the illustrations, especially the ones where the fairy tale characters were dressed up for the party (the three little pigs were dressed as wolves, for example).  However, I think there were just too many ideas in the story.  It was complicated with all of Sky's different mystery solving tools and I don't know how much the cupcakes added to the story, particularly as they seemed to do a lot of different things.   I also thought that the story was just too overtly 'girly'. Yes, changing the ending so that Cinderella didn't marry the prince, and changing ball gowns to fancy dress costumes did subvert some elements of the original story, but when it came to Sky herself I found the sparkles and stars and cupcakes and moonbeam headlights to be almost cringey.

This is an original twist on the classic Cinderella tale – Prince Charming hires Skye, the Private Eye, to search for the winner of his fancy dress competition who has disappeared, leaving only a sparkly slipper behind. As she searches, she hands out cupcakes to those who might be disappointed that they aren't the winners, and there is a recipe for cupcakes included at the end, which is a nice touch. The illustrations were lively and my five-year-olds enjoyed finding the traditional fairytale characters in fancy dress but this book didn't really engage them or hold their attention.

I felt that this book was a nice idea that wasn't very well executed – the plot doesn't really flow, the baking of the cupcakes is shoehorned in randomly, the whole 'explanation' by the fairly Godmother just doesn't make sense, and the language doesn't really engage. It just feels like it needs some heavy editing.

One of the things that struck me as really odd is that, in the search for Cinderella, when Goldilocks tries on the slipper, it fits. Skye tells us she doesn't have the other one, so she can't be the missing costume party winner. (Cinderella hasn't got the other slipper either, but apparently, this is okay.) This confused my daughter immensely, as it runs counter to every other retelling of Cinderella.

Overall, this is probably not a book that we will reread often, though as the little miss loves Cinderella, she says she quite enjoyed it.

An enjoyable read, although felt a little chaotic at times, as there was so much going on. My daughter enjoyed it, although she did lose a little interest towards the end.

We liked the illustrations in this story, they were nice and colourful with lots going on. My daughter especially liked the scene from the fancy dress party. The story was quite long and although I liked the fact that the fairy tale had been changed so that Cinderella didn't have to be saved by a handsome Prince and married to him, (instead starting her own buisness) I thought it was a bit too sickly sweet. Too sparkly and 'girly'.

Georgie loves the story of Cinderella so I thought she’d love this twist on the traditional tale especially as it includes well-known characters from other traditional tales, but she lost interest quickly and hasn’t gone back to it, despite efforts from me. I’m not sure why it isn’t her thing - I shall persevere...
