I thought this was a funny boomk. Dougsl is writing his will because of the creature in the shed that is after him. It was fun to read and packed full of action and adventure. I liked the little doodles throughout the book, and how bits of the book were written in Dougals handwriting. It has short chapters and I really liked Dougals character; he was dramatic but likeable. It was easy to read independently, an enjoyable read.

There are only so many death threats a boy can receive before coming to the conclusion that it's time to write his will, plan his funeral and leave a list of murder suspects for the police, all while keeping a huge, deadly secret. There's a creature in his shed, and if his friends or family don't kill him first, there's every chance the creature will. And none of it is Dougal’s fault...

Mayhem abounds in this fast paced comic tale of family life. As Dougal blunders from mishap to catastrophe, his long suffering family are there blaming him, every step of the way. Dougal, Sibble (it's SYBIL) Mum and Dad are all hilariously recognisable, their relationships mirroring those happening right now in homes across the country.

Jackie Marchant’s wit is brought sharply into focus by Loretta Schauer’s illustrations and the use of different fonts for each character adds extra depth to their personalities. A gem of a book which is certain to have readers laughing out loud!

But don't just take my word for it; here's what some of my pupils had to say:

“I love this book. It's funny and there's football in it.” Year 5
“Sorry I disturbed quiet reading time, but it's just so funny!” Year 5
“Does the author know my sister? Sibble is just like her, she even has her hairy legs!” Year 5
“I need to stop flicking my hair so much in public.” Year 6

In this book we discover the mystery of the creature in the shed and other missing animals. Dougal is a funny character who no one believes. There are lots of funny parts in this mystery story and football.

My favourite character is Dougal, he's funny and when things go wrong he always gets the blame, even when it wasn't him!

The book cover could be more fun, the cover doesn't stand out even though the book is great.

It's taken quite a while for Aaron to get started with this book which is quite unusual. Once he got going he really enjoyed it and found it easy reading with the text being broken up with various things. He doesn't seem too keen to read it again and it hasn't made it onto his shelf of favourite stories.

This was a funny and scary story. It is about a boy called Dougal Daley.
Dougal has new neighbours. Meanwhile, he notices something strange in the shed. Are these two things linked or is this a coincidence?
This was a super book. It includes lots of detail and made me laugh in parts.
I hope you enjoy this book just as much as me!

A very humorous book that would appeal to boys especially, aged 8-10.  Dougal is a great narrator, which I can see boys enjoying how he sees the unfortunate problem that has occurred in his shed! The writing, and amending, of his will is very funny, and cleverly moves the narrative on well.  Clever ending, brilliant sibling commentary, and flowed well.  A big thumbs up!

About Jackie Marchant

Dougal Daley was inspired by a messy bedroom and a random question from my son about writing a will. Dougal Daley has been huge fun to write about – you wouldn’t believe the disasters that happen around him (none of which are his fault of course)! When I’m not writing I love doing school visits and creative writing workshops. I also take time away from the w...
