Lonely Planet Kids' How Animals Build is a beautifully illustrated lift-the-flap hardback that explores the incredible world of animal architects. Children can open flaps and unfold spreads to discover amazing animal homes up high, underground, on land, and under the sea. From spider webs and rabbit warrens, to bird nests and ant colonies, and even coral reefs and beaver lodges, we reveal the secrets to these extraordinary structures and how they're built. Do bees need cement mixers to build hives? Do beavers use cranes to construct dams? No, of course not! Like many animals, they're building geniuses who don't need building site tools to create incredible work. Welcome to nature's very own, super-clever world of construction. Created in consultation with Michael Leach, wildlife expert, speaker, photographer, filmographer, and author of over 20 books on subjects ranging from big cats and owls to great apes and bears. Themed topics include:

  • Apartment Block with Branches
  • Dig, Diggers, Dig!
  • Number 1 Bunny Street
  • A Winning Design
  • It's Buzzing in Here!
  • Nest Neighborhoods
  • This Way to Waterworld
  • Extreme Builders
  • Mouse House Here

I have been reading this book with my son who really enjoys it with all the different lift the flap elements. He has been doing work on animal habitats at school this term so this has fit in really well and helped with his learning. It's a book you can go back to numerous times and find different things to look at and talk about. Would definitely recommend

William absolutely loves this book. He is really interested in animals and nature and loves nothing more than digging in the vegetable patch so when I saw this as a giveaway, I had to go for it.
We were very excited when it arrived in the post and William pored over the pages and spent ages looking at the different habitats. The pictures and the information have really stuck in his memory too. He particularly loved the information about the bees. Things like 'the best decorator award' are such a good way of presenting the information- which in this case was about bowerbirds and how they decorate bowers! The only thing he would have loved to have read about is ants!

Widgem thought the book taught him a look of things about animals and they way that they live that he didn't already know.  At 6, he was still captivated by the information hidden under the flaps.  He was especially interested to learn how many different types of animals live underground and made him aware of how many animals have to build their houses from scratch in various places.

Mummy thought this was a wonderful book, it is packed with pictures and lots of interesting information and it's written in chunks that children can easily read and take in and then move onto another block of information.  A fascinating,  well thought out book designed for children of all ages.  This is a book we will treasure for a very long time and will keep returning to time and time again.

Seriously lovely book, the illustrations are brilliant, not overly stylised and for us this is our preference. The interactive aspects, where you lift the flaps to see more details is fantastic and adds another layer of interest to an already great children's book. We've read this three times now and I'm positive we will read it again and again.

This book is amazing. My five year old son is really inquisitive and always wants to learn. He already loves animals and firstly, this book introduced him to some that he'd never heard of before. It's packed full of animals facts about where they live and how they make their houses. He loved seeing just how different animals can be. Rather than being a fact book, it's made fun by lift the flap style learning and being able to physically see, for example, birds in a tree. I would definitely recommend this book to encourage learning.

Fabulous, interesting and very educational book.  It is incredibly detailed so great for a wide range of ages - my son is nearly 5 so he chooses a couple of pages which I read to him, but older children could pour over it for hours.  I've learnt a huge amount from it, and it's written in a very engaging way to keep children (and adults!) interested.  The only thing I'm not as keen on is the illustrations, but that's purely a matter of taste - I prefer things a bit more stylised but that's just me, and not something my son has commented on! Some of the pages open out and some have flaps so it's fun and interactive for kids.

A lovely book which will stand the test of time - I will definitely look for other books in the series.

My son was over the moon with this lovely book. A strong sturdy hardback that is very engaging for children, he especially liked the lift the flaps part. Very informative for any child but especially for those interested in animals. A bright colourful book that will be read regularly, would highly recommend.
