This animal encyclopedia with a twist showcases more than 100 animals in close-up detail. Arranged from biggest to smallest, the wildlife of the world is revealed with stunning photography and gorgeous illustrations. The storybook descriptions will delight children and let them discover amazing animal facts, such as why the slow-motion sloth is so sluggish and how the plodding pangolin protects itself from predators, as well as some of the stories and myths surrounding their favourite beasts. This beautiful modern bestiary lets you find the animals that interest you and uncover new favourites along the way. From lions and butterflies to sharks and spiders there's an animal for everyone in this celebration of the animal kingdom. Every animal is shown both photographically and illustrated, and children will love poring over the detailed images. The index is packed with reference information, including the size and location of each species, and a tree of life shows how the animal groups are connected. With foil on the cover, gilded edges, and a ribbon for keeping your place, An Anthology of Intriguing Animals makes an attractive gift for any child who can't get enough of wildlife and nature. With engaging information and absorbing images, this book is perfect for children to explore by themselves or for bedtime stories.

A fascinating book on a variety of different animals. Most of the animals are quite well known. Each animal within this book is given its own double page spread. On these pages there is  a large photographic image (mostly a whole page), a small illustration, brief fact in bold and a couple of paragraphs about each animal in question. My eight year old liked the large photographic images and such things as the 'Spider', 'Wasp', 'Grasshopper' which were blown up in size. He was impressed about the fact that giant anteaters can catch 35,000 ants in a day and suggested we should acquire one to get rid of any future ant issues in the garden. He was also particularly impressed about the information on Pumas and how one was caught walking past the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles. I liked the Visual guide of each animal (included the Latin Name, Group of said animal, Length and were it lives) at the back of  book instead of a more traditional index. Useful for a  young non reader. This would make a lovely gift for any child.

I got this book for Christmas because I love fact books.  I really like the animals in this book, I have liked finding out about the platypus and other animals too.

It has some really interesting facts and the pictures are amazing, some look like the animal is coming out of the book.

I really like this book and I think other children would too.

This book is exceptional. It feels like such a treat to even look at it as the gold-edged pages and the beautiful design show you from the start how special it is. My only concern is that my daughter wouldn't have the same reverance for this amazing book but she loved it. She loves animals but this has helped us introduce the concept of so many different types of weird and wonderful animals and the scale of the animals around the world - it has us asking questions and being engaged to find out more. We will read this as a family for years and will keep it forever. It's not often that we come across a book that the whole family can enjoy individually and together. Would make a very special Christmas gift.

This is such an amazing book! It has gold endpapers and the pages are of thick paper so you feel like you are opening something special. Then inside it it gorgeous. Every double page is about one animal and it has both a photo and illustration. There is then a paragraph about each animal that is of just the right length to keep my kids interested. Some of the animals my kids know and love but some are new and usual. This is one of the most beautiful books I've seen. My little girl took the book to bed with her and read it for ages by herself.

From the absolutely stunning front cover and gold edged pages to the beautiful illustrations inside, this book is a joy to look through and read. My almost 6 year old loves listening to all of the facts about the animals and looking at the pictures. This would be a beautiful gift also.

An absolutely gorgeous book!

I used it with my Year 3 class as we were learning about different animals. They loved looking at the photographs and illustrations. Even though we had been learning about some of the animals already, this book contained new facts we hadn't discovered yet!

The information in child friendly and they were all fascinated at what they were learning.

This book looks amazing. The illustrations are so life like its breath-taking to turn the page to see which animal features next. The book itself is fantastic quality in both appearance and feel and as usual DK do not disappoint with the two page spreads per animal and the factual information shared alongside the pictures. I love looking through this again and again as you notice different things each time

This book is bursting with amazing photography and illustrations and who could resist that shimmering gold front cover? Written by wildlife journalist Ben Hoare, An Anthology of Intriguing Animals book is packed with animal facts including those of lemurs, tigers, butterflies and sloths.

This is a great read for animal lovers and will be appreciated a lot more by readers 6 upwards. The book could be dipped in and out of and is complete with a handy ribbon bookmark to help keep turned page corners at bay.

The beautifully ornate cover and golden edges led me to expect something extraordinary. For the most part, this book did not disappoint: the text is lively and my animal-crazy children (6,9,11) found fascination in each entry - finding out new things about seasoned favourites (like wolves - learning about how they're represented in Viking mythology and how to interpret their body language!) and making brand new discoveries (the seadragon - wow!)
The only slight niggle was from me; it's visually lovely, but the photos and the illustrations show each animal in pretty much the same way. It feels a bit like a missed opportunity to add another dimension.
Altogether, a well curated collection which my kids and i will enjoy together for many years
