I read it to RCHogan aged 2 aged 2 & to AIHogan aged 1 aged 1

The reputation of this book is well-deserved. It's a timeless classic that lends itself to a bedtime story by the nature of it's content.

The illustrations are beautiful; as the children get older they are more inclined to examine them and pick out details - so it lends itself brilliantly to developing vocabulary and expressive language. As does the story itself by naming objects.

It's a gentle tale that flows very well and lends itself to reading slowly - perfect for a soothing last story before sleep.

This book seems to be regularly overlooked or overshadows by trendier titles but I can't recommend this enough! We've read it from baby-hood and still read it together now. There is a lot of longevity in this story and will soon become a family staple.

The perfect bedtime story, amazing illustrations and the pictures get darker as the sleep time closes in. An all time favourite in our house. Was a gift when my nearly 10year old was born from a friend of my parents who's own children enjoyed the story.

Love this book. Gentle rhyming text, simple illustrations that help settle sleepy children. My 6 year old still likes this book and my 1 year old loves pointing to the pictures. A must for any bookshelf

I'd never actually heard of this book until I looked at this website and ended up receiving a copy in a giveaway, and I have to say it's a great little story that my nearly 2 year old likes to hear at bedtime. Really pleased I now know about it and hope my son doesn't grow out if it too quickly!

If I had just seen this book on the shelf in a shop, without a recommendation from a friend, I probably wouldn't have chose it! However, the words flow nicely and it makes a lovely bedtime read. I've read this book to my son since he was a newborn and he now regularly chooses to to have it read to him before bed.

This book really does deserve all the reputation it has.
It is the perfect bedtime story for my two year old.
The images on every page are gentle but include so much detail.
The words rhyme in a way that naturally lends to being read slowly and gently.
We have read this several times now, my daughter enjoys finding the items described in the words on the pages, pointing out each one.
This settles her down wonderfully after a hectic day.

We've had this book for all of my 3 year old's life. It is a classic bedtime story. We read it every night, and she loves it. It is simple enough that she can recite it all, but not too simple. It is soothing and the perfect end to a bedtime routine. It's also fun to find the mouse on most pages.

A beautiful short book whose rhymes gently help young ones to shut their eyes and drift off to sleep.

Read during the day even very young children can scan the detailed, colourful, pictures and search out the things in the verse - kittens, mittens, a bowl full of mush etc

Persephone loves this book so much she has two copies - one to take out and one to keep at home. She always wants to be prepared in case she has an insatiable craving for this literary classic!

A classic book, and for good reason. The story is easy for children to follow, it is great for learning words and the older they get, the more details they seem to pick out and get excited about. We all love reading it in our house.

This is a really beautiful book for bedtime. Written in such a way that you can't help read it in a calm relaxing tone.My only criticism would be that the pictures are so interesting that they could sometimes be a distraction to my child, so the effect of getting them ready for sleep was lost.

This is potentially controversial...my husband disagrees with me completely...but I do not like this book. The words are lovely but the illustrations, to me, are quite sinister. The pictures in a book are so important to me and this world is one that I do not want to step in to. I find the colours garish and the illustrations themselves are not friendly or inviting.
