Another great Julia Donaldson book. This one is different from the other books she's written.
On the first read I couldn't get the story and got the words all wrong. But once I'd read it a few times I thought it was a funny story and we like that it included different books along the way.
It's definitely one of my daughters favourite books.
I would recommend this story to my friends and family

This Julia Donaldson book took a little longer to become popular in our house as the children didn't get the story at first. Now they love it and all of the funny characters on each page.
We particularly enjoy reading the titles of the books at the beginning and end, and we spend ages on each page discussing all of the details in the illustrations.
We think we've found the image of The Gruffalo but it's not a clear as in some of her other books!

A fantastic and easy to read book with a great story I was just as interested as to what came next as my son.

Great for starting to learn to read too with lots of repeated phrases, a favourite bedtime story .

Another hit from Julia Donaldson, very clever writing with the story book within a story book them, great illustrations as expected and a nice message about the power of reading. We love this book in our house and I can see this remaining for a number of years! Highly recommended.

My sons love this book, I found it very engaging the way it is written. It basically tells a story of a boy called Charlie who starts of reading a book And then each page jumps to another book which eventually ends up back at Charlie. Great illustrations as expected, my only criticisms would be that I feel this book is more for older children in comparison to other books written by this author.

The rhyming text is as you would expect for a Julia Donaldson book and is great for parent and child. There is a nice circular element for the story and the pictures are fantastic with lots to spot. There are some details which can be added and so the book has the potential to grow with the child. One we'll enjoy for years to come!

We love love love this book!!   It is a great book for pre-schoolers and reception age children as there is alot of repetition in the phrases so it enables them to be able to learn the book quite quickly and recite it on their own - my little boys absolutely love this book and they love the characters in it - especially the ghost who removes her head - they thought that bit was funny! great read by a great author - would definately recommend it! (enjoyed by Adults and children alike! )

Another brilliant book by Julia Donaldson! What can I say? She does it every time with her great sense of imagination, the way she makes the book so easy to read and flow off the tongue! Love the way it rhymes and the way it all connects together. My children love this book and so do I!

My 2 1/2 year old daughter enjoys this story and I think she will appreciate it even more when she's slightly older. The story works its way through pages from the favourite books of the characters it encounters. Each page is illustrated as though it is from a different book, including fiction, encyclopedia, nature guide, joke book and more. The text rhymes beautifully and is a pleasure to read, like all Julia Donaldson books.

Not the usual story from Julia Donaldson but still good after a few reads.
The first time we read the book it felt a bit mixed up, didn't flow and a bit confusing.  However once you read it a few times it's a very clever and funny story.  My children love to look on each page to match up what's happening in the story and point all the characters out.  Worth reading a few times before deciding if you like it.

The use of rhyme in the book keeps the words bouncing along and adds to the intrigue.
The reference to classic fairytale characters is exciting for young readers to relate to and there are lots of great illustrations. The use of speech marks and tiny illustrations can, at times, detract from the words of the main storyline, although that is only a small and personal opinion. On the whole an enjoyable read for both children and adults alike!

Love the rhyming throughtout the book and I really enjoyed the storyline although I felt that my 4 year old might have struggled to keep up with it a bit. She tells me her favourite author is Julia Donaldson so she's very pleased with her new book!

Another Julia Donaldson classic, this one took a little bit of explaining, but once we understood how the story worked, the girls got really into all the different characters and books within the book. Each page had them guessing what came next. Would definitely recommend, possibly to a slightly older audience then most of Julia’s books.

My daughter picked this book by its cover. Yet another fab book from Julia Donaldson. Felt a slightly older book than room and a broom she found it busy and great illustrations. Lots of talking points and items to find and point to. It was fun and highlighted the love of books. She enjoyed picking out the different stories goldilocks and pirates stories and talking about which were her favourites. This is a book she picked up again to look at the illustrations by herself and explained the story to ours. Great hit

We are a fan of Julia Donaldson but don't think this is one of her best stories. It jumps from books to book about different topics which is a very clever idea for a story and ends back up with Charlie Cook where we started however it took a few reads for my 3 year old to fully understand it. He was a little confused to begin with.

My daughter was given a beautiful set of Donaldson/Scheffler board books as a gift.  We haven't enjoyed this book as others in the series as it doesn't immediately seem to have much of a story.  Although now that we've read it a few times we've become a bit more fond of it as it rhythmically hops between other classic books. It'll never be as popular as the Gruffulo, Room on a Broom and Stick Man though.

Charlie Cook's Favourite Book 9780330537827

My children have not enjoyed this book as much as other Julia Donaldson books, and as a result it has not one that has been read much. It is a rhyming tale of a boy and lots of different genres of stories. The book is great at show casing all the various styles, and like all Julia Donaldson books has a good ending,, bit for some reason it doea not quite have the same magic as her others do.

We have all the Julia D/Axel S books and this is my least favourite! I find the stories within a story within a story quite irritating and it does not grip my children like all the other Julia D books do

The illustrations are there, there's a potential for a great story but especially our 4 year old found the book rather confusing as it jumps from story to story on every page. Perhaps a good read for a bit older children who can concentrate a bit better, did not work for us as well as all the other brilliant Julia Donaldson books we have :(

I read it to SophieKelly aged 3 aged 3
Charlie Cook's Favourite Book 9780330537827

The idea of the book is to illustrate the breadth of possibility from reading - from a newspaper, to a fairy tale, to a pirate adventure, to an encyclopedia, to a magazine etc.. with new characters introduced on each page, with their brief "story" ending with them reading the story of someone else, who in turn is reading a different book about someone else's story etc.. The overall arch is that they get back to the original character Charlie Cook.
Some people rave about this book, but my daughter (age 3) and I have really struggled with it - I think its just trying to be too "different" ... and while I appreciate it's trying to promote reading.... I think its hard to engage with and so actually does a disservice to getting children interested in reading.  Too sophisticated for the intended audience.
