The brilliant new book from Megan Rix, telling the story of Florence Nightingale through the eyes of her young ward. Florence loved cats, and had many during her lifetime. This is the perfect introduction to the Lady with the Lamp for young children, told with warmth, humour and adorable animals. Summer 1888: In a fancy house in London, a kitten called Scamp escapes through an open window and finds himself lost in the middle of the city. Across Hyde Park, a young girl called Beth is marching with thousands of other girls to protest the working conditions in the Bryant and May match factories. When Beth stumbles across the tiny kitten she finds that he belongs to none other than Miss Florence Nightingale, who is now indebted to Beth for returning her beloved pet. So begins an unlikely friendship between the great lady, her mischievous kitten, and Beth the penniless orphan. But when Beth's sister Iris is struck down with illness in one of the poorest parts of London, can Beth, Scamp and Miss Nightingale find a way to save her before it's too late?

My daughter really enjoyed this story. She loved the character of Beth and is in love with kittens so this was a hit! It was a great opportunity for her to learn about Florence nightingale, someone she didn’t really know about before this book. It opened up further discussions about who she was and the past. I would recommend this book to any young girl and we are hoping to now read more of these books!

‘Florence and the Mischievous Kitten' is a story of two poor sisters who tragically lost their parents. One day the younger sister, Beth found a very sweet kitten which belonged to famous Florence Nightingale. Both ladies from ‘different’ worlds met and changed each others lives.

It was so heart warming story. Daisy is such a  likable character and the story is written in such great way that the book is . . . well, simply great.
My daughter is 6 and has just started enjoying chapters of stories at bedtime. She absolutely loves this book. It is fabulous introduction for children interested in history of remarkable Florence Nightingale. She is a nursing icon, a lady far ahead of her time, not afraid to step out of her societal realms. The glossary  at the back of the book is very helpful, providing important dates /names in Nightingale's life. This book really exceeded my expectations.
It is fantastic and I would like to say well done Megan Fox!

This is a great story and will be enjoyed by cat lovers.
The book tells the story of Beth and how she becomes friends with Miss Florence Nightingale through her cat Scamp.
The book has a good mix of Beth's story but also historical facts.
We enjoyed reading this story together and think we both learnt something from it.
Really enjoy Megan Rix's books and look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

A great way to learn about Florence nightingale and how people lived in the past. I will be passing this book onto friends as a great read.

This standalone book is the third in the series by award winning author Megan Rix about historical figures and their animals. It follows on from Winston and the Marmalade Cat and Emmeline and the Plucky Pup. What is so appealing about this series is that readers experience high adventure stories about courageous and plucky animals while learning about true people from history and different historical eras. Although targeted at the junior fiction market there is much appeal in these books for older readers as well. In a similar vein to Michael Morpurgo, Megan Rix is very skilled at blending her stories with real historical events to make history accessible to children.

We loved this book, my daughter especially loved reading it as she has been learning about Florence Nightingale at school. The story is great, the way it brings in historical references, such as the “match stick girls” without overwhelming young readers. My daughter really loved Beth, and that she was an artist, as my daughter loves art, and all the kittens in the book were just adorable.
We read this book together, with my daughter reading quite a few pages. The book is quite lengthy for her to read independently at the moment (she is 6) but it will be age appropriate for her for a long time yet , as it is not babyish. I’m sure it will become a treasured favourite.
She has already been looking at the other book covers, spying one about the “Great Fire” “I bet that’s about the Great Fire of London” she told me, she is currently learning about the Great Fire of London at school. This book is now on her birthday wish list.

This book is very good. The description is excellent and so you are made to feel part of the story. The book made me feel scared at some points - I wasn't sure what would happen - and this was very exciting.
The 'Florence' in the title is Florence Nightingale, who was an interesting person.
The kitten in naughty but doesn'tm mean to be. Scamp (the kitten) is definitely as mischievous as the title suggests.
Anyone who likes cats and medical history would love this.
