"Oink!" said the cats . . . With all the MOOing and HISSing and BAAAing and CLUCKing, the farmyard is full of noise. But when Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len hatch a plot to steal the fine prize cow, it's the quietest animal of all who saves the day! Spot the glittery ladybird on every page of What the Ladybird Heard , a wonderful rhyming tale from Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks, the creators of the bestselling The Princess and the Wizard and Sharing a Shell.

The story was very easy to follow and it had a repetitive storyline that my son liked as he could join in with reading the book. For younger children it reinforced animal sounds and my 1yr old also enjoyed listening to us making the animal sounds. The illustrations were lovely I especially liked that the ladybird was glittery on each page and my son enjoyed tracing his fingers over the glittery trail.

My daughter received this book as a present on her first birthday and I thought what a strange book - frightening (with these 2 men who come and try and steal something at the dead of night) and all the animals making the wrong noises (when we were trying to teach her the "proper" names and sounds the animals made)....
But now as the mum of a 3-yr old.... I think the story is fantastic. We have an understanding of taking something that's not yours.... and that the ladybird arranges the animals to work as a team to beat the "naughty" robbers. My daughter loves maps... and traces the route that the robbers intend to take.... and the alternative route that the animals send them on by making the wrong sounds. It's a really clever story, that has so much scope for joining in and quite a sophisticated level of understanding to "get" the trick the animals play.

This book caught my two year olds eye in the supermarket last week. The cover is sparkly and very eye catching. The story is about a little lady bird that saves the prize cow from being stolen by lanky len and hefty hugh. Each page is brighly illustrated, and there is a raised glittery trail my daughter loves to run her finger over to follow the lady bird throughout the book. The story rhymes and is very easy to read as it flows really nicely. Julia Donaldson is such a talented authour andRead Full Review I have to say I think this is one of my favourites, its short enough to keep young children interested and involved in the story, I would definately reccomend this book to oher parents and their children. .

A rhyming story with great rhythm and a great plot to keep little ones entertained. The farm animals and the noises they make will help your child engage with the story.

I read this to my son when he was 2 and he's often picked it up for another bedtime read. Julia Donaldson books never fail.

This is one of our favourite bedtime stories to read to our 11 month old daughter. This is a lovely story and features the lovely rhyming of Julia Donaldson. Really love the glittery ladybird to find on each page, this will be something fun for our daughter to do when she is a bit older.

Fab book all the animals help save the cow by the help of the ladybird who said nothing. A lovely story reminding us to listen more and not chatting all the time. Fun book with rhyming Words we all enjoyed. My oldest daughter then went through the pages looking for the ladybird and making the sounds of the animals especially the cats which were her favourite.

Although we love most of Julia Donaldson's books this remains our favourite. Lovely soothing rhyming story with a few animal noises thrown in which make kids laugh. We've been reading this book to our kids since they were born and they still ask for it now. The extra games to find the ladybird & exploring the farm on the pictures in the front & back are also very popular!

Another amazing book by Julia Donaldson and beautiful illustrations by Lydia Monks. I love how this is a different type of story related to farm animals. Some thieves have a plan that is drawn on a map where the kid can see the difference between left and right and has to navigate on the map, which I totally love! And then the amazing ladybird has a very smart idea to trick the thieves.

My daughter picked this book to read, we like it because we both can participate in reading it together. My daughter likes making the noises of the different animals as well as looking for the ladybird that is on every page. There is nothing to dislike about the book, its just the right length to read in one go and not too repetitive for adults who have to read it.

A great book by Julia Donaldson that appeals to all ages with great rhyming text which we all remember long after reading the story.  A story of how 2 thieves planned to steal the prize cow and how the animals got their revenge. Great for young children teaching animal noises with a more complex theme that older children/adults will understand of planning.  A family favourite for all in our household.

I literally bought this book yesterday and already I've read it 5 times to my eldest daughter. Again it's what we've come to expect from Julia Donaldson - engaging story with great rhymes and memorable characters. A quiet ladybird overhears a plot from Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len to steal the prize cow from the farm and creates a plan with the other farm animals to stop them.  Lydia Monks illustrations help bring the story to life (and there's glitter!) and there's an added activity in trying to find the ladybird on each page which my 3 year old loves. Truly great.

I really enjoy reading Julia Donaldson books with the rhyming throughout. I particularly like this story and the sections with the animal noises. It’s very well written and enjoyed by both myself and my little one. My daughter also loves looking for the ladybird on each page. It keeps her entertained. The pictures are lovely and vibrant too. All round great book.

We didn't realise this was a Julia Donaldson at first but once we started to read through, you could see her style coming out.

Jasper loves the fact there are a variety of animals and the repetition of their sounds which he can now join in with.

Brilliant book and we're looking forward to getting a copy of the next installments of what the Ladybird hears!

There is now a set of these books and each one is as good as this one. The book has lovely pictures, a ladybird to spot in each page, a good way to learn animal sounds with the children. The ladybird saves the day from burglars by getting the other animals to work together to confuse the burglars to where they were in the farm. It's a lovely story which I have found everyone has fallen in love with the ladybird set

Another fantastic read from Julia Donaldson! The beautiful illustrations by Lydia Monk are equally as enjoyable - particularly enchanting by her use of multi-media within them.
Donaldson does not disappoint with her usual flowing, rollicking prose. The story introduces several farm-yard animals and a quiet and observant ladybird. The ladybird overhears the plan of two robbers to kidnap the farm's prize show cow - so the animals pull together and thwart the robbers (who get their comeuppance). The character of the ladybird is particularly lovely - too often quiet characters are overlooked whereas in this tale she is the linchpin.
My son happily listens to the full story without getting bored or fidgetty - even without use of the pictures (if I'm reading it as a bedtime story in nearly-darkness!) He thoroughly enjoys examining all the illustrations and I can work on vocabulary with him using them - it's especially useful that Donaldson includes animal noises as part of the prose.
Wonderful story; beautiful book - I would definitely recommend this!

We've just read this after my daughter chose it at the library. Lots of fun rhymes for very little ones and fun animal noises to make. My daughter always points to the ladybird's trail and says "shiny, shiny"!  She loves shiny things!  We enjoyed reading it together and I think we'll keep coming back to it.

Rhyming books are always fun to read aloud. And a good story to discuss planning and maps. Plus we always love animals and animal noises work for baby and 4 year old.

But, the farmer, the thieves ad the police are all men. No women, really? Very disappointing and puts me off reading it with my daughter and my son.
