I loved this book it was great in a funny way but also has lots of good features in. My favourite character is dotty because she is very funny when she says manmoth instead of mammoth. I recommend it to ages 7+.

Another great book by David Walliams.

This book is set in 1899 London and tells the story of Elsie an Orphan and her encounter with "Woolly" a Woolly Mammoth.  It is a great mix of history and adventure and made us not want to stop reading with my son constantly saying "another chapter please".

The book has great black and white illustrations throughout which really adds to the story.

As with all David Walliams stories you are taken on an emotional rollercoaster.  The "Manmoth" made us laugh out loud.  The book also has many characters who all have their own unique personalities.

Would recommend this book for ages 7+.

This book was so funny and a pleasurable read. It was gripping and very nice and heartwarming tale of a street urchin becoming the local hero! It brought across the message; no matter who you are and how much money you have, you can do anything' I LOVED this book, its a must read.

This book is very good. The story is about a young orphan girl and a mammoth they bring back to life, the adventure they go on and the friendship they build. The characters are really good and there is some funny bits throughout the story. I particularly liked the end and how the story comes together with all the characters. This is yet again another fantastic story written by a great Author.

This book is about friendship. Elsie is an orphan living on the streets of London in 1899. She meets Dotty who is a cleaner at the natural history museum and together along with a professor bring a mammoth back to life. Elsie and Woolly embark on an epic adventure and make lots of friends on the way. I really liked the story. I laughed out loud lots!

This book was really good and I recommend it to everyone in the world. I found the story really interesting and at times I couldn't put the book down and read lots of pages at a time. This book is a bit different from other David Walliams' books, but still has lots of funny parts in it. This book made me feel captivated and made me feel happy.

Wow! We pre ordered this book and were so excited when it arrived, it did not disappoint! Another fantastic Walliams creation, my son loved it, I think the added historical theme in the book added to the enjoyment for my very inquisitive 8 year old.
The story follows an orphan called called Elsie and her encounter with a woolly mammoth. She encounters many characters whilst in the natural history museum. I love how there’s always so much opportunity for lots of accents and silliness whilst reading this books, and the fact his managed to even get Raj in the story is brilliant. He’s our favourite Walliams character.
This book had us constantly wanting to read more. Each chaopter is packed with adventure and fun.
I’d highly recccomend this book!

I loved this book it was great.I think that David Walliams has done a great job of making a book that’s story is set a long time ago sound modern and unique. At first Elsie is just a little girl in a horrible orphanage but then she manages to escape! She gets up to quite some things such as pickpocketing and breaking into a museum not to mention bringing a prehistoric animal back to life.I would recommend this book to anyone age 9+

I liked this book because Elsie the young girl was very adventurous and would go past the limit just to save her friend. This book was about adventure. A massive mission took place to save the ice monster. Orphans like her got treated badly but one nice lady changed that. She helped Elsie along the way.  :)

As with all David Walliams books, the storyline is also really funny and captivating. I'd recommend this book to readers aged 7+.

My daughter and I are working our way through David Walliams collection of books and we have just finished The Ice Monster. We both loved it!

When I first saw it I thought it was too big for me to read to Lily (age7) but the wording is spaced out with lots of illustrations. It is a great story full of adventure and great characters. My other daughter is called Elsie which is the name of the main character so we found it funny comparing them. There is also a character called Dotty who is very funny.

The story is a great story and near the end it was giving me goosebumps where it was so good.

I would recommend this book to adults and children.

One thing that annoys me about David Walliams's books is how everybody harps on about him being the new Roald Dahl. His books have been mediocre to good so far, nowhere near the storytelling of Roald Dahl. But...The Ice Monster is the book that has made me join the bandwagon and to say "David Walliams is the new Roald Dahl"

It might be down to the setting, Victorian times, orphans badly treated, top notch villains, crazy old people and a young girl who is the hero. It also has some impossible crazy science stuff in it, reminding me of the glass elevator.

I read this to my daughter who is very good at the sound effects, so that makes the story more fun and we both gave a cheer when Raj's ancestor makes an appearance.

Easily David's best, a real good story that doesn't feel rushed like a few of his others.

This book is one of the best I have read over the Christmas holidays. It is a book full of adventure. The main gist of the book is that a mammoth comes to town and urchin elsie is determined to free woolly from the national history museum. But she faces many problems along the way. she has to get past the dangers of victorian london. I would recommend this book to people who love diary of a wimpy kid, this is definitely david walliams best book.

A great story...we particularly loved the setting of this book, picturing the London Streets in those times and recognising sights that we have seen in person. We did struggle with the continued use of “sound effect” words and felt that the overuse of these took away from the story a little. The Tony Ross illustrations were fantastic as always. Although the book seems huge these wonderful pictures break up the story nicely and make it easy to read

Elsie is a young girl who was left on the steps of an orphanage when she was born. But, when word gets out that a prehestoric creature is coming to London, Elsie won’t stop at anything to get it back home again, north north north........ I really enjoyed this book and would give it 4/5 stars. I would recommend it to ages 10+ who love adventure and old - set stories, in 1899. This book was sad and happy at times, which made it enjoyable to read. The main characters in this book are Elsie, Woolly and Dotty.

I found that it was a good book but out of all of Walliams' books it isn't the best. Read it if you liked Grampa's Great Escape.

About David Walliams

David Walliams has become one of Britain’s best-selling children’s book authors, often compared to Roald Dahl in his writing style. He writes three types of books: full-length fiction, short stories and picture books and all are illustrated. Generally I'd recommend his picture books for all ages, his...
