Daughter of the Pirate King Series

For a YA fantasy and at times romantasy read that empowers, surprises and bedazzles its readers, we highly recommend the Daughter of the Pirate King duology. The books follow seventeen-year-old Alosa, daughter of the feared Pirate King, as she cunningly tries to retrieve an ancient hidden map, the key to a legendary treasure trove, and ultimately uses it to find the coveted treasure. In the process of her mission, she encounters the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate of a rival pirate ship, Riden, so the books do have romance, although we should warn this is a slow burn. The series is packed full of adventure, longing, family secrets and girl power.

The Lightlark Saga Series

The Lightlark saga by Alex Aster is one of the most successful romantasy series for YA readers, pulling from our favourite tropes. According to the competition's rules, one ruler must die while another gains incredible power. You do have to read these books in order, as each book starts where the previous one ended, but you can expect big plot twists, steamy love triangles and betrayals.

The Caraval series by Stephanie Garber is a much-loved and fast-paced Romantasy sensation for YA readers. The books follow two sisters, Scarlett and Tella, as they overcome the Caraval competition – a performance that only happens once a year where the audience gets to participate for a full week.  Throughout the trilogy, we get insight into the relationship between sisters and their unbreakable bond, and explore themes of survival, strength and love in all its facets. A Court of Thorns and Roses Series

The A Court of Thorns and Roses series (also known as ACOTAR) is a sweeping romantic fantasy for young adults. It follows the journey of huntress Feyre Acheron into the dangerous, alluring realm of the Fae, where she will lose her heart, face her demons and learn what she is truly capable of. Throughout the first three books we follow Feyre’s path as she navigates this strange world and her place within it, all while falling for the dark and handsome Rhysand. A Darkest Minds Novel Series
