Elmer is different. Elmer is patchwork. The grey elephants all love him, but he soon starts to wonder what it would be like to be just the same as them... Full of colour, wisdom and pathos, little readers will love this classic tale at bedtime.
Deservedly a modern classic, with over ten million copies of his books sold worldwide, Elmer's subtle message - that it is ok to be different - resonates with children across the world.

This is such a beautiful book that is an absolute delight to read. Elmer is a colourful, patchwork elephant who is absolutely gorgeous but he doesn't think so - he doesn't realise that it's ok to be different - he doesn't need to be grey like all the other elephants. As the story develops he realises it's actually a good thing to be different and plays a joke on the other elephants. We will read this together for many years to come.

The classics are always the best!! I remember  reading this book when i was a child and it was great to now read this book to my son! This book has not aged, lovely story with enough words for it to be a suitable bedtime story. Playful theme and big colourful pages that enhance the story. We loved this book!

Aaagh - posted this against the wrong book, and cant find a way to delete it!

This was my first Elmer book, but our 4 year old appears to be familiar with this friendly elephant.

We've been talking this week and things - and  people - being unique, so this was perfect.

Lots about being different, but all fitting in, working together and having fun together.

Simple but colourful illustrations just add to the story.

We would recommend this book.

This is a lovely book and has a really nice message. It's about an elephant who is multi coloured and wonders why he is not the same as the other elephants. In the end he realises it's ok to be different. A lovely feel good story and one we would recommend.

Such a beautiful book to read, each page is as colourful as the next and the story of Elmer the elephant who is different is fantastic and a brilliant way to learn acceptance at a young age. My children love reading Elmer and so do I, it never fails to make me smile.

A fab book, Elmer shows us that its OK to be ourselves and that people like us for who we are. My daughter loved the brightly coloured elephants at the end and enjoyed guessing what Elmers was up to.

A beautifully bright and engaging book that is a firm favourite at storytime. Elmer doesn’t like being different to the other elephants but on his quest to blend in finds he might be able to hide his appearance but he can’t hide his personality.

Great story, great pictures and a nice message for the little ones.

A classic book I kept meaning to buy for my daughter. A lovely funny story about Elmer the elephant. He stood out and felt different as he was not elephant colour he was patchwork colour. This tells us Elmer is different to the other elephant but it doesn't matter to them.

This was the first book that we could scan and listen to. It was a lovely treat for us all to listen to as a family. Both my girls were quiet listening and they enjoyed the beep to say turn to the next page. This option gave us the opportunity to point to the different animals and illustrations.

We love everything about this book. The story of friendship and celebrating diversity, the beautiful illustrations, the fact that it is filled with elephants.... there is not much that can beat a heard of elephants in our house. It's a joy to read!

This book is great, the illustrations are too. My little boy hadn't read this book yet. He loves elephants and loved the story. He liked the bit when all the elephants decorated themselves. It's a classic story that will always be enjoyed.

The illustrations are very bright and eye catching and Elmer is a lovely character. Overall a great book to read with a toddler.

My daughter loves the Elmer books, the bright colours and the different animals and reminds me of when I read it as a child. This is a lovely story about an elephant who is different from all the other elephants she meets, but of course it all ends well.

A picture book classic, most people will already know the story of Elmer: the brightly coloured patchwork elephant! You'll have seen him - he doesn't exactly blend in. He's not elephant colour. He's all the colours of the rainbow. And he's an absolute joy! He makes all the other elephants happy, he makes them laugh, he makes them smile. But the strain of being different was difficult for Elmer - he began to wonder if the other elephants only laughed at him because of his patchwork skin. He sneaks off into the jungle and finds a bush covered in elephant-coloured berries and proceeds to cover himself in elephant-coloured make up. On his return Elmer blends in with the other elephants, unnoticed. But something is wrong. The other elephants are standing so still, being so silent, and serious. Elmer wants them to smile and laugh and so he shouts in his loudest voice "Boo!". And they laughed and laughed. When Elmer's concealer is all washed off by the rainstorm, the other elephants realise his trick and decide to celebrate by painting themselves in bright rainbow colours and having a parade!

My son borrowed this from nursery on library day and I was so excited. It made me feel nostalgic as I remember this from being a child myself. It is the sort of book that is a joy to read. The illustrations are fun, the story is interesting and it focuses on friendship and how it is ok to be different and that diversity should be celebrated.

My three year old twins really like the Elmer series of books. In this, the first of the series, the colourful illustrations are just a joy and the story is silly but fun. It teaches children that it is OK to be different, which is a very important lesson for them to learn. The character of Elmer is cheeky and funny. A lovely book.

This book is bursting with bold, bright illustrations that grabbed my son's attention from being very young. That said, it's only been the last 6 months or so that he's been happy to sit and listen to the entire story: although not enormously long the prose can be a little dry for younger readers and listeners as there's no rhyme, so not a great amount of melody or sing-song quality to grab them.
Fantastic story with a brilliant message - that it's ok to be different, better even! I have lovely memories of Elmer from my childhood and it's wonderful to share them again with my son! My daughter isn't quite as enthralled but as she's 17 months I suspect it will come with age, as it has with him.
Overall it's a fantastic book that we regularly visit; my son selects it himself most of the time.

Read to a child aged 2
Elmer 9781842707319

It's taken me a while to submit this review as I felt that if I kept trying my 2 yr 4 month old would finally engage with it - but sadly not. I'm disappointed as I'm familiar with the series/character and it's always nice to have a new set of books/products to enjoy! But anyway... for some reason that I'm struggling to work out he just isn't keen. He usually loves books with animals but I wonder if the illustrations just aren't grabbing him. I think the concept (elephant that stands out but wants to be like the others) is a bit beyond him at the moment but otherwise the length / level of text is similar to others we read at the moment. I will try again when he's a bit older but not sure it will make much difference. Shame.
