I bought this book on a whim last year (2017), I thought the children might like the musical CD having heard "Afraid of Heights", but a Christmas story about a dinosaur, hmm, I wasn't convinced. My three children were not into dinosaurs, I wasn't sure the book would interest them, but how wrong was I?! They are absolutely loved this book, which I read aloud to the youngest two (Age 5 and 8 at the time). They were both engaged, listening and eager for more. It's funny, it's sad, it engaging. There are parts of the book, which I thought they would have found upsetting, but they have rolled with it. William is in a wheelchair, and this is one of the very few children's books I've seen where the is a main character with a disability, it's refreshing to read.
You can listen to the CD independently, or can play the songs as you come to the song number in the book. We all love the CD, the lyrics at times are very funny. If you are thinking about the book with or without the CD, go for the CD. We have even listened to the Christmasaurus the Musical in the middle of August.
DS has read the book twice independently since, and we have already started it again this year as we approach Christmas (just to ensure we manage to get all our Christmas books read).
This is best children's book I've read for a while - suitable from age 5 to 11.
