It is midnight in Crackledawn - a midnight full of magic. Sea dragons stir in the depths of the ocean, silver whales surface beneath the moon and sand goblins line the shores. Everyone is waiting for the phoenix, the guardian of the kingdom's magic, to rise up from the forests of Everdark.

But there is no sign of the phoenix tonight. Something else surges up out of Everdark instead: a harpy bent on stealing Crackledawn's magic.

It is up to an eleven-year-old girl called Smudge and an eccentric monkey called Bartholomew to set sail beyond the legendary Northswirl and stop the harpy before it's too late.

So, grab your compass and roll down your sail - the first adventure in THE UNMAPPED CHRONICLES is about to begin...

When a harpy rises instead of the expected Phoenix in Crackledawn the whole of the Unmapped Kingdoms are in danger. Only Smudge, an eleven year old girl, escapes the Nightdaggers and is left to stop the dark magic from taking over with the help of her magical monkey Bartholomew.
I couldn't put this book down. It went from one exciting bit to the next.
I really like Smudge, she is so brave and different. She was so clever in thinking of all the things to help her try and rescue The Unmapped Kongdoms.
Now I really want to read Rumblestar.

This book is about a phoenix who created 4 hidden kingdoms each contained magic. The people who lived there sort out all of the magic. Every 500 hundred years the phoenix comes to check but this year instead of the phoenix a dark figure comes. It's up to smidge and her monkey friend to save our world. This book should be read by ages 7-14.

This book was excellent value for a World Book Day book because it has small print, meaning it was a much longer story than usual. It is about a girl, called Smudge, who doesn't do well at lessons in school. Smudge lives in a place where the humans are not supposed to know about (the Unmapped Chronicles). The Unmapped Chronicles are in charge of all the weather, and sunrise and sunset. Every 500 years a new phoenix rises to give magic to the Unmapped Chronicles, but one year a phoenix doesn't rise - a harpy rises instead and it wants to steal all the magic. Smudge and her monkey, Bartholomew, have to stop the harpy before it is too late. I would recommend this book to readers aged 9+.

This is a brilliant read. After reading the book, I was ready to carry on reading and find out what happens next for the characters, Smudge and Bartholomew. I agree with some of the other comments that the first chapter may be tricky for some children to get their head around as we are introduced to a whole new realm with an island full of characters. This quickly changes as we follow the journey of Smudge. This book is extremely well written, full of action and description. So much so that it felt like I was watching a film as the description was that good. If you like magic, fantasy and adventures read this book. I would recommend this book to children over the ages of 9. However, adults would enjoy this too, particularly fans of other magical stories such as Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia. Well done Abi Elphinstone: I loved it!

When you set sail in an Abi Elphinstone book there is no looking back; you are swept along on a whirlpool of imagination that will leave you reeling.

This short book, published for World Book Day, is the start of a new series: The Unmapped Chronicles. It takes you into a brilliantly realised world, where all the magic that nourishes the Unmapped Kingdoms, and eventually flows into our world (The Faraway) emanates from a Phoenix. Every five hundred years the Phoenix dies to be replaced by a new Phoenix,  but at the start of this story it becomes clear that something has gone terribly wrong with “The Rising”. Dark magic releases nightdaggers which turn the Unmappers in the kingdom of Crackledawn into paralysed shadows, except for one solitary eleven-year-old, on whom the fate of the Unmapped Kingdoms and consequently, The Faraway, now rests…

We thought this was a cracking little tale for World Book Day.  A taster of what promises to be a fabulous new adventure series.  The world as we know it (and the secret magical world we don't know) are all controlled by the renewal of a Phoenix every 500 years.  However this time around the Phoenix has not appeared - a dark harpie as emerged in it's place.  This threatens the very existence of the world - it's up to Smudge and her monkey Bartholomew to save the day!

Everdark is a story about what happens when a harpy tries to steal all the magic. But Smudge who is just 11 and an eccentric monkey called Bartholomew set off to Northswirl to try and make sure that the magic remains.  This is a lovely book full of magic and adventure well worth a read

We are such big fans of the author, after having read skysong and loving it, that it came as no surprise when they picked this book for world book day. It is a fantastic tale of a new kingdom, of mythical creatures, a very brave young lady called Smudge and her friend, Barthomew. The magic in all the world comes from a phoenix. When one dies, and a harpy rises in its place, intent on keeping all the magic for herself, Smudge is really the only one who can try to fix this. My son loved all the mythical creatures and my daughter loved reading this book aloud. A really good one to share.

Abi Elpinstone's imagination is breathtaking. I got swept up in the magic and devoured Everdark in one sitting!

A magical buzz surges across each page and Elphinstone effortlessly draws the reader into her enchanting world. Adventure packed and fast-paced, even the most reluctant of readers will get sucked into Smudge's journey! With inspiring messages about self-belief, unlikely friendships and the power of never giving up, Everdark is the perfect book to get lost in and fall in love with.

Everdark is the first, short adventure to the promising new series, The Unmapped Chronicle, which will start with Rumplestar, out May 2019. Perfect for fans of Sarah Driver's The Huntress trilogy, Michelle Harrison and Kiran Millwood Hargrave!

Brilliant book about a girl who doesn't fit in and has an IQ level of -3. But the girl is inquisitive and loves exploring. I would recommend this book for 8 to 11 year olds.

Abi Elphinstone does what she does best here:  setting up a fantasy world which is described so clearly that you find yourself thinking about it even when you are not reading.  The short story format leaves some of the action a bit condensed but the story takes the reader from one dilemma to the next and leaves you wanting more.  The relationship between Smudge and Bartholomew (her monkey) is amusing yet touching.  The beginning of the book throws so much information at the reader about this magical, fantasy land and its inhabitants, its creation and the way of life that it had me re-reading parts to remind myself what was going on.  But once I was engrossed in the fast-moving action of the story, the pieces all started to fit together and the mysteries of sun-chatter, nightdaggers, and the unmappers began to fit into place.  A story which champions the underdog and makes you realise that just because you are not top of the class doesn't mean you can't succeed, especially with the right people on your side.

There's magic brimming from every page of this exciting book. It's got a great mix of drama and humour, and the characters are brilliant. Smudge is dislexic and a great role model for children who struggle to read. It's a bit description heavy at the start and I think younger children would have benefited from illustrations.

I didn't get into this story straight away. There was a lot to get your head around, and a lot to remember, to understand the story. I liked that it was very descriptive, and from the way it was written, you could imagine exactly how things would be. This was very helpful as there were no illustrations. I also enjoyed the enchanted element of the book, which is quite new to me, as i don't normally read books like this. A great book for girls and boys.

I enjoyed this adventure story. This book started quickly, there was a lot of action in the first few chapters. I liked that the book got exciting quickly, but I felt like this was a sequel and I’d missed part of the story.

We found this book a little difficult to follow at the start, a lot of description and names of people and places opened the story and both children struggled to keep up with what was going on. Once the story does get going however it is a nice read and we enjoyed it, perfect for anyone who loves fantasy adventures set in other worlds and far away places
