`Once an adventure digs its claws in, there is not an awful lot you can do about it. Especially when magic is involved . . .'

In the snowy kingdom of Erkenwald , whales glide between icebergs, wolves hunt on the tundra and polar bears roam the glaciers. But the people of this land aren't so easy to find - because Erkenwald is ruled by an evil Ice Queen and the tribes must stay hidden or risk becoming her prisoners at Winterfang Palace.

Join Eska , a girl who breaks free from a cursed music box, and Flint , a boy whose inventions could change the fate of Erkenwald forever, as they journey to the Never Cliffs and beyond in search of an ancient, almost forgotten, song with the power to force the Ice Queen back.

This is a story about an eagle huntress, an inventor and an organ made of icicles. But it is also a story about belonging, even at the very edges of our world . . .

'Abi Elphinstone's books are full of adventure, wit, heart, and, above all, bravery' Katherine Rundell, author of The Explorer

This book is quite simply magical! I have literally just finished reading it to my 6 year old daughter and my nine year old son. It's a fabulous adventure story. A tale of friendship and kindness and hope and magic. When i read the blurb and realised the book was about the snow queen i was worried that my son would not enjoy it. I could not have been more wrong. He loved this book. He loved that the snow queen was a proper baddie, he worried for our heroes and laughed too. He talked about the story over meal times and at school. He is a reluctant reader and he wanted to take turns reading it with me, so did my daughter. I have really enjoyed reading this book. I would thoroughly recommend this book to parents and children. It's a wonderful story and if your children love animals, the outdoors and magic, they will adore this story!

This book is simply stunning and one that I can not wait to share with my class at school. The setting described by Abi Elphinstone is so vivid, it is impossible not to imagine yourself there, wrapped in furs to ward off the icy temperatures. Eska and Flint are fantastic characters, both with wonderful story arcs that play out brilliantly, but I really liked Blu (who I know was based on somebody that Elphinstone knows). A magical book and a triumph. One that I will return to winter after winter, and eventually share with my own children.

Magical book, full of adventure. A Great book for both boys and girls. When reading the book, you feel as if you are on the actual journey. The beginning of the book reminded me of a fairytale,so boy's might be put off, but if they read on, they will be hooked. I liked Eska as she was bold, liked Flint for his inventions, and Blu as she is brave. Would like to read more by this author

I read this with 8 and 9 year olds.

This is the first book I have read by Abi Elphinstone and it won't be the last! She managed to create such a beautiful world with amazing characters! I loved Eska the main character but even more so I loved Blu, I feel there aren't enough characters like Blu she is gentle and quiet and in a little innocent world of her own, there were so many valuable lessons shown through Blu's character.

I loved the time spent with the tribes of children, who have to learn to work together to free the adults from the evil ice queen, lead by strong Eska and her eagle.  It's a tale of magic and adventure that will snatch at your heart, one not to be missed, read it cuddled up with the kids for a bedtime story!

I won this book at school and didn't think i would like it from the cover but I was wrong, I really enjoyed it!!!
A fantasy and magical book with adventure I found it easy to read and I didn't want to put it down. There are some heartfelt parts that made me sad but it was part of the story and it fitted in. Flint is my favourite character, he invents and is magical.  Looking forward to reading more of the authors books.

Sky Song was a magical book of friendship and hope, that is best read with a blanket!

Sky Song tells the story of Eska, a child who has lost her memories after an evil Ice Queen has trapped her within her castle. When Flint breaks into the castle in a failed attempt to rescue his mother, he releases the spell holding Eska and together they escape the Tusk soldiers. Flint attempts to not become friends with Eska but when his tribe cast her out into the wilds he begins his secret search for her.

Led by an eagle, Eska manages to find somewhere safe to hide away, honing her skills to survive in the wild. The Ice Queen's curses bring Eska, Flint and his little sister Blu together again and a Wanderer tells them of the quest they must complete in order to save Erkenwald from the Ice Queen.

The story teaches of belonging and of how, no matter how small your tribe, you can be powerful by believing in your cause!

I was utterly devastated when I realised that I had finished Sky Song.It made me want to put my furs on and journey to Elkenwald to meet Eska and friends. It also inspired me to make Winterfang palace out of snow-when the snow finally came!My favourite character was Eska, who is fearless but Pebble makes a very loyal companion. All in all, this novel is a great read and I would recommend it to any fans of Phillip Pullman, C. S. Lewis or J. K. Rowling!

Sky Song is an amazing book. What I liked about this book was that Abi Elphinstone can imagine up entire people and tribes; I had a clear view of the characters. I also liked Eska's personality because she is not afraid once out of the music box. Eska is fearless, Flint an amazing inventor, Blu a young girl who is suprising, Tomkin the mean brother of Flint and Blu, doesn't want Flint to invent, Whitefur a man who tells Eska who she truly is he is very thoughtful, and the three tribes working together is what Eska wants. I absolutely loved the story it is amazing!

This book is magical. Poetic, magical and written with a real sense of place so that you really feel you are travelling through the land. We all really envied the characters in their adventurous hideaways behind waterfalls, in magical caves and treetop safe houses and Ariel villages.

We really echo everything the other reviewers have already said here. It's a fantastic book and prompted us to go to the library and order every other book Abi Ephinstone has ever written!

Great for boys and girls alike.

I loved this story, truly magical and believable. I loved the tribes and the understanding between the animals. The hope that permeates throughout this book is lovely. I literally couldn't put this book down. It has courage and bravery with daring acts. The inclusion of magic was simple and worked. The doubt the main characters showed gives them a real depth. Highly recommend this book.

This book is truly magical. Beautifully written and a wonderful story to share with your children. It can be a bit dark in places so I wouldn't recommend for very young children but as a family we enjoyed it immensely. I have recommended this book to so many families and all have loved it. The journey is one of mystery, adventure, family bond and magic.

This book was utterly spell-binding! Based on the classic story, it tells a tale of friendship, courage and initiative: when Eska gets freed from her prison (in the evil Ice Queen's palace) she, her friend Flint and his sister Blu go on an incredible journey to retrieve the sky song. Along the way they make friends with everything from Erkenbears to eagles. They travel across the whole of Erkenwald to fulfil their quest, and are aided by Flint's ingenious invention, Blu's secret intelligence and Eska's knowledge of the wild. Can Eksa find out about her past, unite the tribes and sing the sky song, or will the kingdom fall under the terrible rule the Ice Queen?

My favourite character in this story was Balpan, seeing as she saved the children many times, and she is wise and courageous. I also liked Blu because she was always optimistic and, despite what many of her tribe thought, very clever. The description was extremely vivid - I was their with Eska evry step of her journey.

This book shows what we do for people we love, and that no matter what, we should keep believing! A great read, and most definitely recommended.

This book is filled to the brim with adventure. The writing is highly detailed so I could imagine the polar bears on the glaciers and the wolves hunting on the Tundra really well.

The main character, Eska, was trapped in a music box by the ice queen who fell from the sky. Flint, a courageous inventor stumbles across Eska in Winterfang Palace and sets her free. This is the beginning of a race against against time to free the other prisoners of the ice queen, including Flint's mother, and restore magic to the kingdom of Erkenwald.

I loved reading this book and really want to read the other books by Abi Elphinstone now.

This book was absolutely magical from the very first page. The journey you are lucky enough to be taken on is one of bravery, loyalty and true friendship of three main characters in the story.
The detail in the book makes the entire story so vivid in your mind and at the same time makes you feel so comfortable its like being reminded of somewhere you once knew.
I couldn't put this book down it was an absolute pleasure to read.

This is an enchanting and fantastical book, set in the wintery Erkenworld where tribes have evolved and distrust each other immensely. When the adults begin to be taken by the Ice Queen for the power that is in their voices, those left behind join forces and work together  to try to rescue them. But there seems to be one particular child's voice that is needed by the Ice Queen for her to gain ultimate control of the kingdom - her voice is the key to domination, and when it starts to wane, it looks like the Queen is winning. But don't bet against the newly-reconciled combined tribe of children! Some great characters in this book, including Blu and a spirit Polar Bear.

Eska is imprisoned in a music box, menaced by the Ice Queen who needs to capture Eska’s voice in order to fulfil her plan for immortality. Flint embarks on a foolhardy mission to rescue his mother from the clutches of the ice Queen, against the advice of his brother and the rest of his tribe. Both are thrown together by circumstance and reluctantly join forces to defeat the Ice Queen and restore the old ways of cooperation and peace.
So begins this wonderful adventure of a quest across icy plains in the company of magical creatures. Eska is a creature with neither memories or family while Flint is slightly afraid of his older brother and fiercely protective of his young sister. The difference is that Flint knows where he belongs (with his tribe) and Eska belongs nowhere. Through the course of the story, however, she builds a tribe, very small to start with, but it grows to encompass all those who oppose the evil of the Ice Queen.
Eska and Flint’s quest, to find her voice, to unite the warring tribes, to prevent the Ice Queen from conquering the whole land, often seems hopeless and beset by insurmountable difficulties and there are a few lines about hope at the end of Chapter 28 which will stay with this reader; ‘…hope moved quickly. It could burn inside you one minutes and then, just when you thought you’d lost it, you’d find it shining in the hearts of your friends……….So long as one of them remembered to bring hope with them, perhaps things would turn out all right.’

Sky Song is a story of adventure, friendship and hope. It follows the steps of Eska and Flint who's worlds have been decimated by the Ice Queen.

It requires them to call on the wild to help them to eradicate the Ice Queen and reunite the world that once was.

With moments of joy, terror, strength and sorrow, Sky Song is a beautiful tale and I recommend it highly to anybody who can get their hands on a copy!

Wow - this book is simply 'STUNNING' from start to finish: it will have you sitting on the edge of your seat desperate to find out what happens.
The language, description and phrasing that Ephinstone uses throughout is exquisite and vivid and will only add to your vocabulary repertoire -words such as tundra and skittering; similes - 'like drops of polished night' and 'as gnarled as washed-up timber' - are again simply quite beautiful!
The characters are vivid and appealing to both boys and girls and portray important messages to youngsters today about kindness, bravery and friendships kindled in the most unusual of ways.
A great adventure story that is sure to win many hearts and awards and should most definitely be made into a film.
This book was a joy to read and I will certainly be purchasing more by the author as soon as I can.

Sometimes you get your hands on a book that is so full of magic and adventure that you can feel it spilling out of the pages before you even open it. The thought of this book sent shivers down my spine and enticed me with talk of a tale of an evil Ice Queen who rules over Erkenwald, a snowy kingdom where whales glide between icebergs, wolves hunts on the tundra and polar bears roam the glaciers. A place where the children have been left all alone as their parents  lured by a haunted organ have become the Ice Queen’s prisoners at Winterfang Palace. Hope seems futile, despair seems inevitable until fate brings our young inventor Flint to cross paths with Eska, a girl who is trapped in a music box by a wicked curse. Together they must travel to the ends of their kingdom in the hope of discovering the truth behind the prophecy that tells of the Sky Song which is their only possibility of defeating the Queen.
‘Sky Song’ is the most magical, wonderful tale that made my heart sing, my pulse race and filled me with so much joy from start to finish. Magnificently atmospheric, Abi transports the reader to these vast snowy plains –  with dark magic rumbling beneath the surface – where tribes are hidden to protect themselves from the grasp of the Ice Queen. Moving at breath-taking speed this adventure is dark, thrilling and spell-bindingly captivating. Abi has created a cast of characters that are just sublime, a fearless eagle huntress Eska and a wondrous inventor Flint who believe in the old magic against all the odds. They risk everything they love dearly in their battle to save their tribes from the cruelty of the Ice Queen and it’s only the bravery of Eska and Flint that offers a glimmer of hope to overcome the darkness that lies across Erkenwald. Yet Flint’s sister Blu, who I absolutely adore, teaches them both that bravery and knowledge lie in the most unexpected places and sometimes they have to stop and listen to find the answers they’re seeking.
Like the Dreamsnatch series the power of friendship is at the heart of this story. It’s only when Eska and Flint unite that there becomes an opportunity for good to overcome evil. ‘Sky Song’ is a story about acceptance and tolerance, we learn how easily divisions can occur when hate is brought into people’s lives. Blu and Flint are  unique in that they go against the wishes of their tribe to reject outsiders and it’s this courageous decision that ultimately saves them all. The power of the Ice Queen is impenetrable until the tribes join together and unite in their anger at the damage she has done to their lives. An epic adventure filled with heart, friendship and daring this truly is an unforgettable tale I absolutely loved it.

This amazing story tells the tale of Eska, a young girl rescued from a music box by a doubtful magician from the Fur Tribe  named Flint. When she gains his younger sister Blu's friendship, will he trust her?

In the quest to save Erkenwald from being at the beck and call of the evil Ice Queen, who's dreaded anthem steals voices everyday, they will battle against the odds.
The to do list?
-  Get the Fur and Feather tribes to trust each other and believe in magic.
-  Save Eska's powerful voice
-  Find the Frost Horn
-  Shake the skies
-  Keep Blu safe
-  Stop the Ice Queen
-  Stay alive

I recommend this book to anyone 7+ in need of an adventure.

My class are really enjoying this book. The world that Abi Elphinstone has created is beautiful and magical and has inspired some of my children to find out more about the Northern Lights and journeying to the Arctic. The characters in this book are interesting and we really love Eska's kindness and courage. As well as being an exciting fantasy adventure story, the key messages in this book are about belonging and that it's ok to be different. Reading this book has prompted some excellent discussions about how we treat other people and ways that we can share what is special about us to help others.
