David Walliams is an extremely talented writer. This book revolves around Alfie, a young boy that detests going to the dentist. He lives with his dad, whose lungs are damaged from working in a coal mine. His school is visited by the new dentist in the area, a woman with mind-boggingly white teeth called Miss Root. Everyone loves her, but Alfie thinks that she isn't who she seems. He isn't alone in his theory; Gabz, a shy girl in his year believes exactly the same thing. Alfie discovers that the toothpaste she has given everyone to use contains acid, and can eat away at even metal. Also, kids in the area, that are putting teeth underneath their pillow to get a coin, are finding all sorts of horrors under their pillows instead, such as a bat's wing or a dead slug! At home, things are looking bleak for Alfie too, with his dad hiring a social worker called Winnie. Winnie feels that Alfie is a poor troubled child lost in his world of imagination, whereas Alfie is annoyed by the fact that no one believes his theory about Mrs Root.
A book with a sensational plot-twist and an ending that will leave your eyes welling up in tears. I would definitely recommend it.
