I thought twice about reviewing a Roald Dahl book as he really doesn't need any introduction or recommendation. However I have great memories of this book from childhood and it is among one of the older non small child books that we have been reading together so it is worth commenting on that. I worried that the young boys would be scared by the crocodile but the story is written in such a clever way that I need not have worried as instead they laughed at the crocodile's antics. No wonder it has stood the test of time.

I have to admit to a celebratory air high five when my children pull this book off the shelf for story time. I have and never will get bored of reading this cracker - or snapper!
My children adore this book and they are drawn to Quentin Blake's huge, bold humorous drawings - which occupy double page spreads and large portions of the page. The pictures tell the story in themselves - so it suits younger children too who maybe won't listen to all of the story but will enjoy the pictures. The text is of medium length, so would suit readers of around age 7+ to read independently - but younger ones will love this being read to them.
It's the story of the Enormous Crocodile, who unlike his passive fish-eating friends, loves eating juicy little children. However, he's not adverse to trying other things either and he tries to take a sneaky bite out of Trunky the Elephant, Muggle-wump the Monkey, and the Roly-Poly Bird - but his attempts are foiled. The sneaky crocodile concocts many plans to try and catch a juicy child - such as disguising himself as a palm tree, a see-saw, a bench and other things. But as soon as he gets close to snapping a child - the jungle trio of Trunky, Muggle Wump and Roly Poly come to the rescue.
My children and I find this story brilliantly funny. We are on tenterhooks when the children get too close to the enormous crocodile's disguises - and of course we love how he gets his comeuppance at the end.

Thoroughly recommended. We love it.

What a wonderful story. My son was drawn in by the illustrations on the front cover and the pictures inside and although much longer than we would normally read he listened enthralled for the whole book.

We loved the cruelty of the enormous crocodile, the sense of danger throughout the book and the feeling of satisfaction at the end when he gets his comeuppance.

enormous crocodile arrived the morning from santa! This book took me back to my childhood where it was read to me and my sister many times ( my sister actually bought it for my daughter this Christmas) . It's not even 1pm and its been read already. Both girls sat still and didn't say a word, almost petrified that they may end up being or of the children the enormous crocodile might eat! As always Roald dahl's intently descriptive text about the crocodiles large teeth shining like knives in the sun conjours get pictures in your mind, supported by Quentin Blakes wonderful illustrations. The story is about 'the enormous crocodile' who has 'secret plans and clever tricks' to feast on a child before the days out. All the animals of the forest are shocked at his plans and end up ruining his plans to eat them! The end of the book had the girls in stitches as he catapults through the sky, space and in the end land up sizzled in the sun! This book is a must for all children's book cases. It will most certainly still be read for many years to come here! We also have the giraffe the pelly and me to read this afternoon, anorher classic from my childhood, I can't wait!!

A story I remember from my childhood that my daughter now lives to read. The roald Dahl magic never goes away. The nasty crocodile and all the wonderful animals that try to stop him. My 7 year old loves how revolting the crocodile is and makes her laugh and keeps her enthralled in the story.

I am delighted that my 6 year old daughter used her World Book Day token to purchase her first ever Roald Dahl book. I found her the following morning out of bed rather early with her head in  'The Enormous Crocodile', snuggled in her chair with a torch! This warmed my heart and I felt a pang of excitement that she is entering a whole new world of adventure and excitement. The book kept her entertained with its wonderful characters and delightful illustrations. A fun book for all ages.

Awesome book from one of the best! We loved the Enormous Corcodile. S loved all the funny animals he meets on his journey through the jungle and laughed like crazy at the end when the croc gets his comeuppance. A hilarious Dahl book that would be a great introduction to this brilliant author.

A great book for introducing younger readers to Roald Dahl. We loved following the sneaky crocodile to find out what tricks he would try next and cheering along every time he fails! The large illustrations on each page make this easier to follow for little ones than some of his other books we've read. We read it over a few days and the story was never forgotten.

A great book to read for a 5 year old that is passed the stage of just smaller picture books. This one doesn't have chapter but the reading flows so easily and the illustrations are great! Love how the crocodile claims to be smart to all the other animals and he actually has some clever ideas, but the other animals all save the kids from the crocodile. A very fun story and easy for younger kids to understand as well. They might get a bit scared of the crocodile but in my case, my son actually was cheering for the crocodile!
