Nzumah is a mischievous African prince whose antics often land him in trouble. His life in the idyllic village of Bantu is guided by his family and the community at large. Storytelling and proverbial language is the medium by which adults communicate wisdom to the young. In The First Volcano, Nzumah's teacher Mama Chonba tells him a story about how the first volcano erupted. An unlikely hero, Yinka saves his village from being destroyed from a hungry fire-breathing dragon. The moral of the story is, brawn without brains achieves nothing; strength and good looks are not most important.
