The first book in The Trapdoor Mysteries, a series about Tally, a code-breaking, animal-loving servant girl and her best friend, a squirrel named Squill, who solve mysteries with the help of a secret library... Ten-year-old Tally is a servant girl at Mollett Manor. She sleeps in the scullery sink, and spends her days scrubbing, polishing and ironing (when she's not secretly reading books). Then Tally and her squirrel friend, Squill, find a secret library hidden under the manor - a magical library where the books come to life! When Mollett Manor is burgled, can Tally use the knowledge she finds in the books to catch the criminals? Can they even help her solve the mystery of her missing mother?

If you wanted to find Tally you would have to go down the hall...down the spiral staircase...  into the kitchens...and then find the scullery.

I would give this book 10 stars if I could, it is a great read and is my favourite book

This is a really lovely book to read. We all loved the main character Tally. She's a very remarkable young lady, who has a great sense of adventure. She is on the hunt for burglars that are stealing from the Manor where she lives and works. The book is written really well, there are some lovely touches such as the footnotes. The illustrations are super too. The best bit is the magical plot. We are all eager to find out what Tally and Squill will get up to next.

I felt this was a great introduction to chapter books for my youngest daughter as we love the Fairytale Hairdresser series. The girls loved the fact that this book had some illustrations, which helped them become absorbed into the story through their imagination. We all really enjoyed reading this book, the first taste of mysteries for us. We liked the characters, especially Tally and are keen to now read the next book.

The sign of a good children's book is that it can also be enjoyed by an adult, this is definitely one of those books.  Tally works as a scullery maid at Mollett Manor.  How she got there she doesn't know - though she has vague memories of her mother at a cliff top.
When the manor is burgled Tally determines to catch the thieves.  With the help of her squirrel friend, Squilly, they find secret passages and solve puzzles and find a magical library.  This helps them work out a way of solving the crime!
The book is packed with facts and we both loved the ideas of the library books that come to life.  Tally makes a charming lead character and a squirrel sidekick makes for great fun.  Lucas loved the puzzle aspects of the book and we are both looking forward to reading more of Tally's adventures!

We really enjoyed Tally's first 'Trapdoor Mystery'. The book is perfect for confident younger readers and is a brilliant introduction to the mystery genre. We loved the historic setting, which suits this type of story perfectly. Tally's fierce intelligence and wonderfully positive character were particularly enjoyed by my young daughter. As was Tally's sidekick, Squill! We hope it's not too long until her next adventure is ready to read.

A brilliant book from the author of the 'Fairytale hairdresser' (which we love in our household). This book was no different. Poor Tally lost her mother when she was two and was put to work by Mrs Sneed at Mollet Manor. Tally finds herself a friend in the form of a cute squirrel. I read this in a few sittings because the writing is so good. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

A review with a little help from Mummy doing the typing: I loved this book a lot and would like to read more books in the series. I really liked the characters, especially Squill the squirrel. I am seven but this book wasn't too hard for me me too read.
Feedback from Mummy: My daughter is a huge fan of Abie Longstaff's previous book The Fairytale Hairdresser so she was pretty excited to read the Trapdoor Mysteries. This is has a slightly more grown up feel but has still got that fun and whimsical style that we loved from her previous books. I suppose the greatest recommendation for any children's book is when the day after reading the book they tell their cousins all about the book and they decide to play their own mystery game.

‘The Trapdoor Mysteries,’ is an irresistible new mystery series featuring an inquisitive young girl called Tally and her best friend, a squirrel named Squill. Tally who was abandoned at birth after the tragic death of her mother has been brought up as a servant girl in a loveless home where she spends her days scrubbing and polishing from dawn to dusk and her evenings sleeping in the kitchen sink. Desperate and destitute this doesn’t hold Tally back and unknown to the horrid housekeeper she is secretly reading books, keen to learn as much as possible about the world all around her. Using her fierce intelligence, Tally manages to crack a seemingly impossible code which leads to the discovery of a magical library where books come to life. When her home is burgled nobody can understand how it could have possibly happened but Tally cleverly realises the books in the library hold the key to solving the mystery. Brilliantly written and beautifully illustrated, ‘The Trapdoor Mysteries,’ is an engaging, delightful series and I’m thrilled the follow up, ‘The Scent of Danger,’ is equally as marvellous.

Tally was an orphan girl who lived in Mollett Manor and worked there as a maid. During the lonely days she spent in the house she accidentally discovered a secret library. Her determination, curiosity and magical books helped her to solve the mystery of disappearing objects from the house she lived in.

I was intrigued and lured by the front cover so I sat and read it myself in one sitting. It's a griping tale -  a great introduction to the thrill of 'mysteries' for any confidently reading children. The story was exciting and adventurous and it was a fantastic twist at the end - very surprising - you wouldn't have thought it. It's a sweet book and I recommend it!

A quirky tale of a modern Cinderella mixed with a who done it . Plenty to get our teeth into and the children loved their first taste of detective novel. Seems to be a series of these books so looks like something for the pocket money.

Found this book hard to follow and a bit boring to be honest. My son is an independent reader but I ended up finishing reading the book to him as he gave up a few pages in. He’s 7 and reads stuff like ‘dirty bertie’ and ‘Harry potter’, maybe best to try this with an older child and this book is second in the series so maybe that’s why it made very little sense to my boy :(
