A beautifully written, lyrical tale featuring a cast of funny and
loveable characters, created by CBeebies' presenter Cerrie Burnell
and stunningly illustrated by Laura Ellen Anderson. Harper and
her friends get to visit the City of Singing Clocks right by the
mysterious Night Forest. It is rumoured that a magical Ice Raven
whose song can melt hardened hearts lives amongst the ebony trees.
With the children's help The Wild Conductor plans to capture the
mythical bird and create the greatest orchestra ever known. But
Harper soon needs to decide who actually needs their help the most...
The third title in the successful Harper series.

we have read the other two Harper books and really enjoyed the magical feel of the story, my 7 year old loves hearing about Harper and her gang of friends, their animal companions and all of the super-powers that they have. This book was another wonderful read, carrying the readers away on a fantasy adventure through the night forest

I liked when they told me what sort of instruments they had, that music was their life! I love music too! There were parts I found hard to understand but overall I think the story was magical and made me want to be with them in their world!

To begin with my daughter and I found this book a little confusing as we haven't read any of the previous Harper books and struggled to understand some of the references. Once we did get into the main part of the story though, we both really enjoyed it. It is a really beautifully descriptive book and the fact that it refers to the more traditional fairytales really did add to its magical appeal. The characters were extremely likeable and the illustrations were beautiful and really complimented the story. We will definitely be recommending this book to others and will be reading more of the Harper books in the future.

A fantasy story full of mystery and magic. When all the town's cats begin to mysteriously disappear, it is up to Harper and her group of delightfully quirky friends to solve the puzzle. With just enough tension and surprise to keep young children gripped without being too scary, this is a wonderful story full of imagination. The characters are vividly drawn and the plot well-paced. A very enjoyable, entertaining read.

Janina (10) says: "I like the characters. They go on adventures and discover things. My favourite character is Harper because she sounds really nice and she plays the harp and I love harps, so we have something in common.  The story is very magical".

Valerie (Beanstalk reading helper) says: " We are jusgt getting into the adventure part of the bookand I am so pleased that Janina is enjoying it.  We like the printand spacingwhich helps the reading alongwith the illustrations by Laura Ellen Anderson.

The characters and their world are fuel for the imaginationof the reader.  We really want to know what happens next...."

So we haven't read any of the previous Harper books so had no idea what to expect.  For the first 60 pages or so I can honestly say it felt a bit mad.  There was so much description and "magic" floating around it didn't really make a lot of sense to me and just felt overly chaotic.  In fairness I think this was because the author was trying to include some back story so that it would make more sense - alas it almost had the opposite effect!  Once we got to the bones of the story and the adventure in the night forest it came into it's own.  I like the idea of combining old and familiar fairy tales into a new story and the characters in the book are fun.  It's nice that there is a musical theme running all the way through as well (since this seems to be a subject at risk of being dropped in many schools at the moment!) and Lucas really liked the description of the Magical Conductor as he was cycling through the skies on a cloud of ravens.  There are lots of fab illustrations throughout (though what I think was supposed to be a wolf looked rather cat like to me) and overall it's a fun book.

I read this to my daughter Over several bedtimes. We hadn't read any of the other Harper books and so were a little confused initially, we the storyline, and the magical elements complicated the story a little. However the story is beautifully written, of a little too descriptive sometimes for the age range this is aimed at. I would say it is more suited to ages 7 plus, as my 5 year old did struggle with the comprehension and we had to chat about the story and re read sections for her to understand. I loved the musical elements to the story and found it highly original, however I think it should state that the books should be read in order as a series, and include a short prologue with a bit of back story. The illustrations through out the book are wonderful.

this book has a really exciting plot and some great characters. Our favourite character was Liesel, because she is messy and strange. The story weaves a interesting adventure through a magical land, but at times the amount of descriptive words complicated the story. Addie enjoyed the story as she had the previous titles by Cerrie, I think it would be difficult to pick up in the backstory if you hadn't read other Harper books. We must also mention the beautiful illustrations which lifted the story even more.

we haven't previously read any of the harper books and the beginning of the book was a little confusing and hard to follow as there is reference to previous books. The main story we both enjoyed and the magical fairytale references were great. The characters and illustrations throughout the book were great and we are now looking forward to enjoying harper books in the future

A little too discriptive for me and my 8 year old making it hard to follow and she kept loosing the main story line.

I recommend to read the other 2 books in the series first, but as the story went on and Harper and her friends adventured into the city of singing clocks it made a lot more sense and was a little more enjoyable.
