This book is cool! It opens up flat so yuou can see the illustrations properly. There are numbers so you can read section by section and find out information about that part of the trail. Its interesting and fun to use, I've never had a book that did this before.

Cameron loved this book, and found it fascinating learning all about the Rocky Mountains. He thought the fact that it folded out into a huge map was "really cool", and loved the illustrations.

I like opening up the book which unfolds like a long road.  It has details of the Canadian rocky Mountains travelling by train and then by coach.  I love the details along the route which are numbered, I can read the short versions on the front and then turn to the back for more details on the areas being described.  I really like it.

This is a large pull-out frieze, rather than a book. It's very detailed and interesting about the Rockies. It would be great for a child doing a school project on the area. There is long map with pictures on one side and on the other side more detailed information. We enjoyed looking at it together and finding out about animals and geography of the area but it's not the sort of thing you can dip into in the way you would with a book.

This is a fold out frieze with information on both sides on a journey through Canada, lots of detail and great illustrations. This would be great as holiday prep / memories for a Canadian traveller or for a school project etc.
We found the design of the frieze quite cumbersome - although it is great fun to fold out and follow the map, if you want to read the more detailed descriptions on the back of the frieze you need to keep turning it back and forth and finding your place again, and there is a lot of card to manage for little hands. For this reason it's not something we've returned to after a first 'explore'.
Would look great on the wall in a school / playroom, but again the info on the back makes this awkward. I would hesitate before buying anything in this format as although the content was good, there are better designed geography & travel books out there.

This is a freeze with lots of information on rather than a book. It is very pretty and very long and one side of it has pictures and small bits of information about a route through the Canadian Rockies first by rail then by coach. It covers lots of places of interest as well as many native wildlife and local sports and each tiny bit of picture and writing has a number attached to it. On the back the numbers are all written out and there is more detailed writing about each bit.
I was interested in this as I have been to the Rockies before and learnt a few new things as I read it. I still have loads more to read.
I think this kind of freeze would be good to support learning at school but also for the curious child who likes to learn about places round the world. I have an eleven year old who is like that and she has been dipping into it today

This book is very cleverly designed to provide as much information as possible in a condensed and engaging format by folding out to a long information sheet. I feel that this format would work particularly well with timelines as well as more common geographic features. The only downsides are that the Rocky Mountains aren't necessarily a subject that fascinates kids, and also you will need a long room or hallway to extend the book to its fullest extent.

The Lonely Planets Kids series is amazing, and all of the books I have got from this series have been great. The only reason that I have given this book three stars (rather than five) is that this publication probably has a more limited target audience.
This is a pull out frieze, rather than a book, that describes the journey from one side of Canada to the other. One side has a map of the journey with pictures and small bits of information about places and nature to see along he way. The reverse side provides more detailed information with paragraphs of text on each information point.
The format means that we needed a lot of floor space to look at it, and it was not possible to dip in and out of it (in the way that you can with a book). I think this publication would be great if your family was planning a trip or if your class was studying this place, and the series does include other areas. I will put this up on my children's bedroom wall so that it is easier to view, and so they can look at it as and when they want.
