Harper Lee has a worthy successor. Wolk is a big new talent - The Times

Annabelle has lived in Wolf Hollow all her life: a quiet place, still scarred by two world wars. But when cruel, manipulative Betty arrives in town, Annabelle's calm world is shattered, along with everything she's ever known about right and wrong.

When Betty disappears, suspicion falls on strange, gentle loner Toby. As Wolf Hollow turns against him, and tensions quickly mount, Annabelle must do everything in her power to protect Toby - and to find Betty, before it is too late.

Powerful, poignant and lyrical, Wolf Hollow is an unforgettable story.

Grace thought this book was fantastic. The story really got going from the start and lots of mystery surrounding Betty's disappearance and who was involved that kept grace reading for hours, highly recommend

Amazing! A powerful tale set during World War 2, centring around Annabelle, a girl from small town USA.  When a new girl, Betty, arrives, it soon becomes clear that she's a bully.  But things soon escalate when she begins targeting a WW1 veteran.  Annabelle will need to use all her reserves of inner-strength to stand up for what's right.  Truly touching and definitely one for the more mature child reader.  10+

I don't know if it's the whole snuggling down in the evening just me and Boo (back to routine September) but me and Boo have absolutly loved this book.
It's old fashioned and its not that easy to build the initial imagery, but when passed this stage we have loved it.  The mystery surrounding Toby, the story behind why Betty is the way she is and the sweet innocence of Annabelle carries this book throughout and kept us gripped.
There are harsh bits - girl looses her eye to a stone, bullying, etc. but it is based around ww2 so it's going to reflect the violence of the time.

This was my best children's book of the summer (and I read a LOT).  It's always been easy for the bully to make trouble for the vulnerable, but in wartime America, 'the vulnerable' includes anyone of German extraction.  So, when Becky points the finger of blame for Annabelle's injuries towards war-scarred loner Toby, suspicions are quickly aroused, and the more so when Becky herself goes missing.  It's the people you don't know that you fear the most.  Only too late do the folk of Wolf Hollow come to know Toby for who he really is: not a murderer or a bully, but a hero.

This is a story of a girl called Annabelle who was living in a quiet, peaceful world before cruel heartless Betty arrives from the city along with her grandparents and tears away Annabelles world. One day Betty goes missing and suspicion falls on the odd Toby (who really is harmless) because of Betty's lies and then the whole of wolf hollow turns against him except Annabelle and her mother.
This was a remarkable story and i loved every moment of it my favourite character is Toby because he loves animals ( like me ) and was never cruel or selfish.
My least favourite character is Betty because she is cold hearted and cruel and she tells big lies to get others that she does not like into trouble. Most adults see her as a sweet harmless girl because she can play innocent really well.
This really was an extraordinary book and I would recommend it for ages 8-14.

It's a beautifully written, moving story set in the shadow of World War II about a young girl named Annabelle who must stand strong when confronted by a manipulative tyrant. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to everyone.

Aaron started to read this book and he enjoyed the beginning but found it quite a hard read. I'm sure it's one that he will read as he gets a bit older. I also read the book and I've really enjoyed the story and the way that it's written.

I liked this book but i needed some help to read and understand some of it. I really liked the main character Annabelle, she is really strong and brave. I think this book would be better for kids a little older than me.

Alisha 10 started to read this but I don't think shes quite ready for it yet, So we have put it away for when shes a bit older. The book recommended age range is 9-12 but I would definitely say its more for 11/12 year olds.

Hollie aged 6 read the blurb and the first chapter of this book. She is well above the expected level of reading for her age but she did find this one a little difficult. She liked what she had read and said the rest of the book sounds very good from the blurb. We will be keeping the book and trying her with it again in a few months.
