Based on the childhood experiences of author Laura Ingalls Wilder, who was born in the Wisconsin woods in 1867, Little House in the Big Woods is the first in the classic series of the Little House books. Inside a log house in the depths of the woods we meet the Ingalls family: Ma, Pa and their three daughters Laura, Mary, baby Carrie and Jack the dog. The book details the lengths the family go to in order to survive, ‘Pa had shot the deer the day before and Laura had been asleep when he brought them home at night and hung them high in the trees so the wolves could not get the meat’. Simple pleasures are described in detail, ‘In each stocking there was a pair of bright red mittens, and there was a long, flat stick of red-and-white striped peppermint candy, all beautifully notched along each side. They were all so happy they could hardly speak at first’. Descriptions are vivid and convey in easy-to-read text the harsh reality of everyday existence for this American pioneer family. In this edition, illustrations are dotted throughout, bringing each scenario to life.
