I love the fact that in all of Emily Gravett's books, the picture (the story) always starts on the very first page, not many other books were there are a few blank boring pages and then pages with boring information on them! Dogs is wonderfully drawn in Emily's own artistic style. Each dog is loveingly drawn with its own personality. The story is cleverly told from the point of view of a certain character, which isn't revealed until the end. The sentences on each page are short enough for my two year old's attention span.

My daughter has loved this book since she was tiny. She loves to look at all the dogs and we discuss how they look different and what breed they are. A cute book to have in your collection. :)

A beautifully drawn and written poem extolling the virtues of dogs, my son enjoyed this right from the start. The story runs through lots of opposite characteristics (slow /fast) accompanied by drawings that delightfully illustrate their differences. The best bit of the book is the rather wonderful surprise ending : )

We love reading this story and discussing the different dogs in the pictures. Some are big, some are small, some are scruffy, some are smart etc. Reading this always seems to start lots of different conversations! My daughters also love the little surprise at the end.

This book's and repetitive prose is a great for young children and it's beautiful illustrations captivate my children. It may help that they are both big dog-lovers (we have two) but that doesn't detract from the quality of the drawings or sweet tale, which outlines all the types of dogs that the author loves.
Young children will simply enjoy looking at the pictures (in which there are plenty of details to talk about) and enjoy the simple story (with a fab little twist for an ending!) As children get older it offers concepts such as opposites (do/ don't: scruffy/ smart) as well as a wealth of adjectives to define with your child.
It is a very short read but I think the benefit lies in discussing round the pictures and text with your child.
I also like that it's written in first-person as most children's books are in third.
It's a charming book; especially for children who are as enthralled with dogs as my two.

We really enjoyed reading this book, as it is great for talking about different types of dogs. My daughter enjoyed relating it to dogs that we have seen when we are out and about. The pictures are lovely. Be warned though, if your child is like mine- they will end the book wanting a dog!!

My daughter got this book from nursery. She enjoys books with animals and this one is about dogs, and she really likes dogs. More than the book itself, She liked on the first few pages before the book started, and at the end, it has pictures of different dogs and what kind of dog they are. We discussed which ones we liked and disliked, and which ones we would have as a pet. It is a simple book, and its not very long.

Independent on Sunday said this book was "set to become a classic"....so I had great expectations. The illustrations of a wide variety of dogs are lovely... but the accompanying poem is very basic "I love big dogs, I love small dogs, I love dogs that bark.... etc". Not enough in it for a 2nd read.... but I suppose a real dog-fan might enjoy.
