Shabba me whiskers! It's one of those Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton. They're only the craziest, funnest most amazing books for children in the world. This is book five.

Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear Good evening. Do you like bears called Padlock? Course you do. Do you like hot-air balloons? Course you do. Do you like tall sailing ships with mad sea captains, and horrifying old villains and words like `wab!', `tungler' and `kelp'? COURSE you do! Well, guess what, you lucky little nibbleheads?

Perfect for fans of Roald Dahl and David Walliams.

Andy Stanton studied English at Oxford but they kicked him out. Before becoming a children's writer he was a film script reader, a market researcher, an NHS lackey, a part-time sparrow and a grape. Today he is best-known for the hilarious and much-loved Mr Gum books, which are published in 34 countries worldwide in over 30 languages. The series has won numerous awards, including the inaugural Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Red House Children's Book Award and two Blue Peter Book Awards.

Another brilliant and laugh out loud Mr Gum tale! I was a bit hesitant about the title (knowing about what dancing bears were), but I put my faith in Mr Gum and was not disappointed.  This story sees Polly attempt to rescue a dancing bear (will she succeed? You will have to read to find out) and includes the usual cast of characters - Billy William the Third, Alan Taylor (the gingerbread man with electric muscles) and Jonathan Ripples (the fattest man in town).  This story is full of imaginative and absurd wit that as with other Mr Gum stories made my six year old roar with laughter. It also had some rather touching and less obvious undertones of the importance of caring for animals and the importance of not mis-treating them.  The 'bad guys' are rounded on, and the response of Polly is outstandingly mature. Without losing any laughs, or high moralising, the important of animal welfare and how to deal with those who mistreat animals is brilliantly and subtly covered.

Fantastic book, and my personal favourite so far of the Mr Gum books that I have read with my son.
