Absolutely gorgeous little tale from the Apple Tree Farm series, the children get involved in cleaning the station and they don't know why but it ends in a lovely outcome for them, great illustrations, not too long and very useful for children learning to read, highly recommended.

I love this one from the mini book series! My daughter loves vehicles and it's nice to show her a book about historical trains, as she won't see many like this any more! The station and the coaches also look a lot like the renovated train station/museum we have open near us which is a nice link. She's so interested in this book she hasn't even tried to find the ducks yet! A lovely book I highly recommend.

This charming story is one from the Usborne Farmyard Tales series. The Boot family go to help everyone clean up the old train station, which has long been out of use. The children don't know why they're doing it - until the old steam train arrives and they all go for a trip on it, with Mrs Boot playing guard for the duration. This is one of my son's favourite stories - thanks to the focus on the train! I like how it builds anticipation at the beginning by not revealing the purpose of cleaning up the station - it created a great surprise for my toddlers when the train appeared!

The illustrations are brightly coloured and cheerful; they work well with the text - offering clues to the words we're reading. They are full of details which makes them wonderful for talking about with my toddlers - a great exercise for their language development. There is a little yellow duck hiding on each page which keeps my little ones engaged and entertained.

I really like the design of the Farmyard Tales series: the text is split into two levels; the top one is short and simple and the bottom is longer and more complex. They are designed with young readers in mind, they begin with the simpler text then move on to the more advanced lines as they gain confidence. I've found the format works just as well for reading out loud for toddlers: the top line is great for very young children or when they are struggling with attention. The bottom lines expand and lengthen the story - great for when they're older or with better attention spans.

There is plenty of longevity in this book; it's suitable for a range of ages and abilities which ensures we can come back to it for years to come.
