This is one of my personal favourites of the Farmyard Tales series; there is a more interesting plot than in some of the other titles.
The children are on a school trip on the steam train - that is, until the steam train breaks down and the children are stranded. Dolly the heavy-Horse is hitched up to the carriage and pulls it back to the station. My children really enjoy this one thanks to th combination of a train and a horse - 2 firm favourites!
The charming illustrations are bright and full of details; we use them a lot to talk about together and pick things out to work on expressive language. My toddlers really enjoy hunting for the little yellow duck that is somewhere on every page.
One of the best designed feature of the book is the text: it's split into a simple sentence (that can be read in isolation) and further lines to expand the story. I think they're designed for early/ more confident readers but I find they work really well for reading aloud to adjust the story for the age and attention of the child.
A lovely book that I highly recommend.
