The Pet Shop is one of the titles in Allan Ahlberg's iconic children's picture book series about skeletons, Funnybones. Despite being set in a dark dark house, this brightly coloured book is perfect for early readers! A dog skeleton is a boring pet so the two skeletons take him off to the - Miaow! - Squeak! - Grunt!- pet shop to swap him for something better. 'There can be few families in the British Isles who do not possess at least one well-thumbed Ahlberg' - Independent on Sunday Allan Ahlberg has published over 100 children's books and with his late wife Janet, created many award-winning children's picture books, including Peepo!, Each Peach Pear Plum and the Kate Greenaway Medal winning The Jolly Postman. Other titles in the Funnybones series include Funnybones, Mystery Tour, The Ghost Train, The Black Cat, Bumps in the Night, Dinosaur Dreams, Skeleton Crew, Give the Dog a Bone and A Brilliant Bone Rattling Collection, all of which are available from Puffin.

We've read Funnybones books before so Leo was already familiar with the characters and the repetition of 'dark dark' in this story. When the Skeletons got fed up with the dog being so noisy and decided to swap him, Leo enjoyed making different animal noises for the pets. When they swapped for a cheeky talking parrot Leo laughed so much that he couldn't talk! He enjoyed the mystery pet at the end of the story and that the parrot kept being cheeky.

This is a fun book, as you expect from this series. This time the skeletons get a pet dog, but all it does is bark. So they take it back and swap it for a fish, which just blows bubbles. This goes on and on until they finally get a surprise pet. My little boy enjoyed this book and found the parrot bit very funny.

Both of my children have been hooked on this series since we got the whole lot for Halloween. It’s captured my son’s imagination in particular and insists on one of them being read every night.
This tells the story of the skeletons night-time adventure in the local pet shop. Both children love the skeleton animals!
The illustrations are brilliant; very simple but bold and effective. They help keep my children focused on the story and also aid in their understanding.
I remember FunnyBones from my own childhood and I’m delighted to be sharing them again with my own children.

These are brilliant stories making ‘spooky’ fun for younger children!
The illustrations are funny for most age groups and the story itself is easy to read through.
Perfect for Halloween reading but fun at anytime - highly recommended!
