I started this list some time ago, as I wanted to put together a list of children's books with characters on the autism spectrum (to include aspergers). This was both to help children understand the various characteristics and and challenges that people on the autism spectrum face (for example of teachers or siblings of children with autism) but also because I wanted a list of books for children with autism, so that they could see themselves in stories, see stories written from the perspective of an autistic child and see children's books with autistic characters celebrated for their talents instead of being recognised for their differences.
As you can see below, there are a number of picture books about autism and middle-grade longer fiction available but far less choice in the tricky 6-9 age-group. Surely there is an opportunity for authors and publishers to address this and publish more autism books for kids?
Huge thanks to the Twitter community for plugging a few gaps, with particular thanks to Jo Cummins (@BookSuperhero2), Jax Blunt (@liveotherwise) and William Cobbett Primary Library (@WCPSFarnhamLib) for their suggestions.
