Dragonbreath by Ursula Vernon is a brilliant series that mixes comic book two-colour illustrations with middle grade fiction for readers aged 8+ taking bigger steps towards independent reading. It's funny, fantastical and packed full of fun mythical creatures!

The books all follow main character Danny Dragonbreath. He's a young dragon who can't quite breathe fire, but that certainly doesn't stop him from going on fantastic adventures with his trusty friends Wendell and Christiana! Their action-packed missions involve dirty dungeons, squelchy moats and big surprises. Amd the mysteries they must solve include mutants, toxic sludge, and enormous missing dentures. These books are so fun, and have so many fantastic characters to love.

Told in a mix of comic panels and text, this hilarious middle-grade series is perfect for fans of  Diary of a Wimpy KidDog Man and Loki. If you loved this book and would like to read more like this, do check out our blog post on the Best Illustrated Fiction Series for 9 and 10 year olds.
