The Orphans of the Tide series has been described as ‘unputtdownable’, ‘enthralling’, ‘atmospheric’, ‘gripping’ and ‘brilliant’ by the likes of The Times and The Guardian. We couldn’t agree more. This is the perfect middle grade fantasy adventure series for fans of His Dark Materials and Harry Potter.
If anything, let us convince you to read this by the setting of the first book alone: a city built on a mountain, jutting out from the sea. And this is just a taste of how imaginative the rest of this series is.
The City is constantly menaced by the sea surrounding it, washing over it, sometimes leaving animals, like whales, or people behind. And when it leaves behind a mysterious orphan boy, the citizens of the City believe his is an enemy. Everyone but one other orphan, Ellie, a young inventor who lives in her workshop of curiosities.
Ellie has no idea what she’s in for when she sets out to help this strange boy. She must prove his innocence to everyone in the City, put herself at risk, and ultimately escape with him on an adventure that will take them to colourful tropical island shores, meet mysterious queens, and ultimately prevent a terrible war.
