The Wheel of Time series, written by Robert Jordan and completed by Brandon Sanderson, is perfect for all lovers of YA high fantasy and has been recently made into an Amazon Prime series.
Complete at 14 books, this series is a time investment to say the least (but well worth it). Inspired by European religions, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism, at the core of the story is a prophecy: one day, a malevolent being, the Dark One, will return and only one person, known as the Dragon Reborn, will be able to fight it. The Wheel of Time explores themes of nature, time and the balance of good and evil. The books are set in a fantasy world built on rich magic systems and incredible cultural diversity, where time is not linear, but it is cyclical, and throughout the books we follow a number of different characters.
This is still a top-selling series, often compared to The Lord of the Rings. If you enjoyed these books, do also check out our recommendations in the Best Magical and Fantasy Series for 13 and 14 year olds blog post.
