The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien is the fantasy series to stand the test of time, enchanting readers across generations and a firm maker of the high fantasy genre.
In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit, Frodo, is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across the magical world of Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power — the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord's evil dominion. Over the course of Frodo's journey, the books explore themes of friendship, found family, love, morality and courage and almost a century later these themes still resonate deeply with readers.
The books were made into films in the early 2000s, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Sean Astin. In 2022 a TV new series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, based on the appendices of the novels was released.
The series also includes a prequel, The Hobbit, originally published as a children's book. This has also been made into a film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and starring Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage and Benedict Cumberbatch.
