Fans of dystopian fiction will love this YA series about a group of children who recover from a deadly disease, only to discover it's given them supernatural powers. The books have also recently been made into a movie starring Amandla Stenberg.
Life as a sixteen year old is hard enough. Add to the mix a deadly disease that's left you with uncontrollable superpowers and you've got a tricky situation up your sleeves. This is what happens to Ruby, and so her parents ship her off to Thurmond, a state 'rehabilitation camp' for children like her, who are brainwashed into suppressing their powers. Soon enough Ruby will discover that there is an agenda behind these camps, and a corrupt government is at the head of all operations. She must become the Children's League's Leader, and carry out a difficult plan to bring down the government as the fate of a generation lies in her hands.
This story has romance, friendship, camaraderie, action - all staples of a Alexandra Bracken novel. If you enjoyed this series, you should also check out her most recent Silver in the Bone books.
