Billy and the Mini Monsters is a brilliant laugh-out-loud adventure series. The funny stories, colourful illustrations and simple text make it a perfect read for newly independent and reluctant readers.

Meet Billy - an ordinary boy, living an ordinary life. Until one night he found five Mini Monsters in his sock drawer. He saved their lives and they swore never to leave him. From that moment on, one thing was certain...Billy’s life would never be the same again!

Billy and the monsters’ adventures together are action-packed and hilarious, as Billy tries to cover up for his hairy, smelly, not-so-scary friends. The books see Billy and the Mini Monsters through first experiences, such as school trips, parties and moving house, as well as common fears or anxieties, like bullying and being scared of the dark.

Written by Zanna Davidson and illustrated by Melanie Williamson, we really recommend these stories as a first introduction to chapter books, with their colourful illustrations and approachable, funny stories. The books were originally part of the Usborne Young Reading Series, and, thanks to their popularity with readers and reviewers, they are now being given a new lease of life, as they are re-released in paperback with new covers, with two new books publishing in 2021.

These books are ideal for readers who are growing in confidence from aged 5 upwards. The small chunks of text, comic strips and colourful pictures make these stories fun and easy to read. The series is much loved by young readers (check out our Toppsta reviews!), teachers and parents and is part of The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge. 

You can read the books in any order, but book 1 Monsters in the Dark will give you the story of the mini monsters appearing in Billy’s bedroom for the first time.
