This magical, bewitching thriller YA series by Sally Green about witches gained so much popularity and following that it’s now streaming on Netflix as The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself. If you like Patrick Ness or Markus Zusak, you will really enjoy this series.

The books are set in a fantasy-imagined modern-day England, where witches roam amongst humans. And in this world, the witches are at war: Black Witches and White Witches fight against each other, White Witches are good and Black Witches are evil. And our protagonist, Nathan Byrn, is a both. His mother is a healer but his father… is a killer.

Throughout the series, Nathan will have to learn more about himself, his origins and his Gift. He will also learn that the world he is part of is much more complicated than he thought, and there’s much more to the war than the divide between Black and White Witches.

This is a gripping, page-turning trilogy, full of magic and wonder, but we do feel it’s necessary to flag that there may be some swear words, so we would recommend this for a 12+ readership.

Since publishing Half Bad, Sally Green has gone on to publish another YA fantasy series called The Smoke Thieves books.
