Grandfather had been gone for two years but I never thought it would be an ordinary day he'd come back, like a Monday or a Tuesday... I always knew he'd return across the water, triumphing over a few monsters on the way, I just didn't know when...

When Azi's grandfather leaves their small Mediterranean island, Azi waits every day for him to return. The arrival of a nesting turtle and a tall sandy dog convinces Azi that it must mean that Grandfather is on his way. As Azi digs deeper into the past, he begins to unravel hidden secrets and starts to find out just how alike he and his grandfather really are. And without him, Azi knows he will never feel complete...

A really beautifully told story about a boy Azi waiting for his grandfather to return. Told in the first person, and with space between the lines making it easier for children to read, Azi's tale is very moving indeed. We really enjoyed it. My son loves the water and loves fishing so he especially loved that element of the book. I liked that it was focused on friendships, relationships with family and about making new friends. A lovely read!

I really enjoyed reading the book. I was touched by this heartwrenching and moving story!
Azi is missing his grandfather (a sailor) who left their house one day and can't understand why it takes him so long to find the way back. The boy feels really lonely without him grandfather who is his whole life. After 2 years of waiting he decides to find him! This is the moment when he meets his future friends: Beth and a lost sandy dog. The books is full of surprises and most of all the feeling of lost and loneliness..
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who feels lonely, who doesn't feel they fit in or has a sense of being rejected and doesn't know why. I found myself entirely captivated.

A boy called Azi lives with his Uncle who shouts a lot. He was found as a baby by his grandfather. With the Sand dog he goes on an adventure to find his grandfather.

I liked this book because Azi can 'read' the sea and goes on an adventure.

We loved this book, it is written in such a beautiful and descriptive way that it conjors up pictures in your head so you do not realise there is actually no large illustrations contained Within the book.
This is an emotional and heartfelt story which makes you think about what it means to be lonely.

A holiday dream of a story with an undercurrent which gently pulls you in and draws you to the ending refreshed and sighing happily, but with a far deeper understanding of what home means. Azi has lived on the island with his Grandfather all his life: he came from the sea to a man of the sea, although he doesn't really understand what that means. Two years ago, Grandfather abruptly left, and Azi's heart is now pulling hard to find him. He begins to search for signs that the sea sends to him, and receives a turtle, a sandy dog, and a girl named Beth. Together they work their way through the islands, searching for Sandy's owners, Azi's Grandfather, and all the little pieces of Azi which make up a much larger story.

The Sand Dog is a beautiful, gentle book which allows the reader to gradually see how lives cross and expand to become parts of a greater whole. Highly recommended.

A very emotional and deep read, really touched a nerve and pulled at the heart strings. My daughter was perhaps at the younger age of suitability just due to the nature of the content. She really enjoyed it and had so many questions. One or two years were shed by all. Great read.
