The first farm that Beatrix Potter owned, Hill Top, was an old house with thick walls and many hiding places for rats and mice. In The Tale of Samuel Whiskers this farmhouse is Tom Kitten's home and the story tells what happens when Tom accidently comes upon the rat Samuel Whiskers living in a secret hideout behind the attic walls.

aryThis one will be too scary for when Sophie understands. Was ok for bedtime story for now, just doing the voices. But the language is difficult and its a bit scary even for me! for tom kitten!

One of Beatrix Potters longer tales, this of Mrs Tabitha, a mother cat who rather dreadfully loses one of her kittens and enlists the help of her neighbour Mrs Ribby to find her missing son. unfortunately the lost kitten has wandered off in the house, and finds himself face to face with Samuel Whiskers - a rat!  What will happen to the kitten? Will he escape from Samuel Whiskers?

This is a harder tale to follow for younger children, and the meandering plot means that it does not really hold much attention for older children.  This is one that we have only read a couple of times, and have not been drawn back to re-read. The pictures are still great and there are still some fantastically old-fashioned words to learn and explain the meaning of.

This is a rather convoluted tale about a little kitten who runs off from his mother in a house of enormous rats. The mother hunts for him (and of course as it's Beatrix Potter there is talking of whipping him!) but he has gone off up the chimney and has a terrifying ordeal with the big rats who want to make him into their pudding. We found that this book was rather too long and my daughter lost interest a bit towards the end.  It doesn't have any of the fun or really engaging characters. I liked the use of the word 'durst' - I don't think I've ever heard that before. Overall it's ok but not one of the best in the series.
