I'm a giant monster, with sharp, sharp claws.
I've got big, spiky teeth and loud, loud roars.
Which is why I say, to everyone I meet . . .
CALL ME SCARY . . . DON'T CALL ME SWEET!

Everyone thinks that little monsters are cute and cuddly, but this monster's grumpy and grouchy. Honest! He does REAL monster stuff, like stomping around and eating squishy, squelchy food like bug eye stew. He's brave, too - he's not scared of ANYTHING. Not even big, hairy ogres . . .

. . . Wait, is that a big, hairy ogre? HELP!

This is a very 'sweet' story about a little monster who doesn't like being called sweet. He wants to be seen as a giant monster who is scary and has big teeth and sharp claws. The little monster wants everyone to recognize him for the big, scary, stinky monster he thinks he is. However when a giant Ogre appears the little monster starts to think again. The book has some lovely illustrations and the rhyming text means the story flows really well. There are lots of noisy words such as RAAAAH and STOMP written across the pages which really emphasize the monster theme and the story itself is short, sweet and lots of fun.

This fun story is about a sweet little monster who tries very hard to be known as scary. He does lots of scary, monsters things - like stomping and being stinky. Until - that is - he meets a hairy ogre who likes to eat scary monsters. Our little monster realises he is sweet after all and goes about telling the ogre why.

The rhyming text is great to read out-loud; the story has a great rhymth to it. It's a cheeky, playful book with an amusing plot. The sound effects within the text helps keep my children engaged as they keep coming as surprises.

The illustrations are beautiful; they are bright with lots of colours. There are lots of little details and features in the pictures which are great for talking about with my toddlers. My little girl thinks it's hilarious that one of the monsters carries a handbag!

It's a lovely story to demonstrate there is no need to rush growing up; it's much better to enjoy being just what you are at the moment! There is plenty of scope for learning and it's an amusing story to boot.

I highly recommend it.

Wonderful book and great for my son who is learning to read proper sentences.  It's about a little monster who doesn't want to be called sweet but then he meets an ogre who only likes to eat nasty slimy monsters and wants to be sweet in the end.

It's a really fun story.  Great for bed time.

My daughter loves this book. She finds it so funny and giggles away. The little monster wants to be horrible and scary and tells everyone to call him anything but sweet until a scary troll comes along he then decides he really is a sweetie pie. The story flows nicely and it's easy to read.

Georgie won this book as part of the school’s readathon for World Book Day 2018.
I had a smile on my face throughout reading this book to Georgie - I don’t know if it is because of the look on the cheeky little monster’s face or because I thought I could predict what might happen, but, as a result, we love this book.
It is a rhyming book with repetitive phrases for joining in.
It is a story that teaches that we need to be able to adapt to keep safe in life.

My daughter got this book from nursery. Its about a little monster who doesn't want to be called sweet. He is scary, stinky and messy. At the end though he is picked up by an ogre who think he looks like a nice treat as he likes to eat little monsters who are scary, stinky and messy. The little monster tells him he is a nice little monster, who is in fact very sweet. Its a funny, fun story that my daughter really enjoyed. She liked the colourful illustrations.

I probably should not say it but it is a sweet story. A good story line with lots of descriptives and expression which is great for encouraging little ones to read and engage too.

This is such a fun book to read. It features a little monster who is determined to be smelly and disgusting .... until this nearly backfires at the end!
The illustrations are lovely and there is a lot for us to talk about as we read the book. My little boy is a big fan and we read the repeated lines together.
