A brilliant book that my daughter really enjoys to read. The story is amazing - not that simple - but I think it's very engaging for a child. The pictures are attractive with plenty details to chat to my girl about. Charming and mysterious rhyming story and great illustrations accompanying each page make you enjoy the read. I have to say that we haven't seen such a beautiful rhyming book for a while! It's a mysterious tale for children to follow along with to see what happens in the end and who is this scary creature Grotlyn?
I highly recommend it - it's absolutely fantastic story. My daughter has really engaged which is something that doesn't happen often. Honestly this is adorable – from the art to the story concept too. The story itself is well thought out to get kids to interact with the book.

A beautifully illustrated hard back book with wonderful rhyming words. My little girl was intrigued to find out who was taking everyone's things. It is a lovely story with clever use of words.

A gentle and intriguing mystery is scattered throughout the pages of Benji Davies’s ‘The Grotlyn,’ of whispered sightings, missing items and misunderstandings of who it could possibly be. We catch glimpses of the enigmatic Grotlyn in darkened corners, on rooftops, in pantries scoffing all the cheese but still no one know who it is and what they could possibly want with all these weird and wonderful items. Yet readers do not worry, this is a playful, mischievous tale that will bring a smile to your face. The use of a muted palette creates an atmospheric read but the splashes of vibrant red give this book a warmth and joyous feel. Sublimely illustrated, with exquisitely crafted rhymes this is an absolute joy of a book.

My daughter enjoyed this book. It's a mystery in which items are being stolen from the residents of the town. The tone is somewhat dark and mysterious, without being too scary for young children. There are visual clues as to the identity of the thief that she really enjoyed finding. The thief was a monkey who wanted to make a balloon to fly away, and you can see bits of him throughout the story. I do wish there was a reason given for the monkey to want to escape, but it would have made the story a bit too long. The illustrations are great to set the tone, and the text rhymes in order to help the story flow along. I will admit that the rhyme scheme didn't work with my accent at times, which might make it harder to become popular in the US. But it's a fun story that I hope will translate across the ocean.

A Bit apprehensive when I first opened the book in case it was a little scary - how wrong I was! a lovely rhyming tale of things that go missing at night from different townsfolk, and scuttling and scurrying in dark places - people assume its a mythical creature - the Grotyln - and fear it, much like Children see "monsters in the dark" or things that go bump in the night - The "Grotlyn" is in fact just a naughty monkey, who likes to collect peoples possessions! easy to read, amazing illustrations and a fun build up to a surprise ending!

This book is a grower - I wasn't a huge fan on first reading but really enjoyed it when I read it subsequently.  I think it might be a bit scary for some children but my 4 yr old loved it.  The pictures are beautiful though, and the storyline is very sweet.
