My animal-mad five year old chose this book with his World Book Day token and I read it to him as a bedtime story over three consecutive nights. Goodness me! He loved it so much that he wants it read to him all over again and has spent a lot of time poring over the illustrations and animal fact snippets at the end.
The story couldn't have been more well suited to my son, being the tale of a boy who loves all of the weird and less-loved animals at the zoo. The animals themselves are all hugely anthropomorphised, with human-like emotions, and the underlying message is about dealing with bullies, whether you be human or animal. The story is told with a hefty dose of silliness and slapstick humour that had the boy laughing his head off and even punching the air near the end. This was our first venture into the work of David Walliams but we'll definitely be interested in reading more of his books now.
