A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here - one of whom was his own grandfather - were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason. And somehow - impossible though it seems - they may still be alive. A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

This book was soo amazing! I loved every second of it. I couldn't put it down and finished it in about 3 hours. The peculiar kids are so mystical and enchanting. Also the wights and the hollowgast are extremely scary so I wouldn't advise a child younger than ten to read it.also it contains horrific pictures that help the story run smoothly

It is a fantasy horror story about perculiar children secluded from the world and how they go on a quest to save their Ymbryne.
Now, I am not a horror story person but this book had me cliff hanging all the way to the end. I was unable to go in the dark at night anywhere without watching my back twice and yet I couldn't stop myself from reading this spine chilling book. I had to order the second part- Hollow City, the second I finished it. Read the second one in 2 days and am now on to the third one. Simply fantastic- Makes you shiver but you just can't put it down. Suitable for children older than 10 perhaps, slightly younger if they are feeling brave, althought I wouldn't reccomend it.

The photos used in the bok, of peculiar children are mostly all real, I think- makes you think if there really are children with such peculiar genes.

I read this to my 9 year old, prior to starting reading I was unable to find anything indicating the age range this book was aimed at. My son was keen for us to read it, having looked at the pictures!
Physically the hardback edition we have is beautiful, with black and white pictures throughout which do enhance the story.
Very quickly it was clear to me that this book is aimed at children older than my son - I would suggest 12+, however he was keen for us to continue, so we did, with me editing out mike swearing!
This is the story of Jacob who following his Grandfathers death seeks to find out the truth about his Grandfather, who had always told exciting and colourful stories, insisting they were true!
This book was slow to start, however it generated speed, the characters are engaging and the story is well told.  I have read it aloud to my son, I suspect this would flow better if read independently. Despite my reservations, my 9 year old has enjoyed it and wants us to read the next one together! We will see! I maintain it is for slightly older children and I would suggest an older child would get more from the story in terms of comprehension!
